Norgren Pressure Regulators
Posted by Jim on February 8, 2021 at 1:59 pmI replaced a leaking Norgren pressure regulator about 3 weeks ago. You could easily hear the leak from the regulator. If you adjusted the pressure up, the leak would stop but always return within a couple of seconds.
Today I found the new regulator leaking in the same manner. It also stops when adjusted, but returns. My question is whether these regulators have a history of not being reliable even when new. Did I just get a ‘bad’ new one?
Any help would be appreciated.

You may have purchased a “Relieving” type of pressure regulator instead of the “NonRelieving” type. It may be performing as designed.

I didn’t provide enough info in my original post.
The new regulator is the same model as the original one, R73G-2AK-RMG. It is a relieving model. I am assuming that it is correct, because it is the same as the one that has worked for the 5 years that I’ve owned the coach.
The new replacement regulator is plumbed the same as the old regulator based on the arrow on the base.
When I replaced the regulator, the compressor went from running every 30 minutes to about 5 hours. I have been chasing other leaks, but the regulator was the biggest. Now the new one is leaking and it’s back to every 30 minutes.

I remember reading in an article you wrote about modifications you made in your air systems that pressure regulators are notorious for leaking. This regulator is for the pocket doors. Could a valve failure downstream at one of the doors, they both still function, cause the pressure leak at the regulator?

I never investigated to try to see why the high incidence of leaks at the regulators used on our coaches. The one used on my generator air bags was a leaker and while I was awaiting a replacement I tightened it up and it is now leaking again after several years.
I’m clueless.

My regulator is 3 years old and has a intermtten leak part# 111940 on regulator it’s self, Googled part# it says it is a self reliving regulator. Other # WM279E1 it’s like William Controls is the manufacture. Was thinking about taking it apart and see how it works and use a little sealer around diapham don’t think it is rocket science ?? Do we need a reliving regulator more things to go wrong?

I found the same regulator that is non Reliving WM43B1 or 111135

I did a rebuild on the original regulator with a Service Kit #4381-600.
Put the rebuilt regulator back in yesterday. So far, no audible leakage like before. The compressor still runs too often, but far less than before. I believe other smaller leaks account for this.
One difference however. When I installed the rebuilt regulator I left off the Norgren air trap that was originally attached to the regulator on the inlet side. The trap was catching zero moisture due to the previous addition of two air traps upstream of the pressure switch. Thanks Jon.
I have considered the possibility that the air trap had been leaking, but the leak was so bad I could feel air flow around the regulator with my hand.

That Norgren working temp is 175 degrees, Detroit is 195 plus degrees on a hot summer day that’s pushing the limit. Maybe that’s why they fail? The OEM on mine a little higher temp 200 degrees less to go wrong, And they have the same one that is non relieving WM43B1 or 111135
