  • NHTSA Recall # 14v-041 RE: Super Power Inc

Posted by george on June 17, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Just received a notice from Marathon regarding NHTSA Recall # 14v-041 that requires the Super Power battery equalizers to be replaced. If overheated the units could cause a fire in the engine compartment. Marathon FL estimates the replacement of the 2 equalizers and associated wiring will take 1 to 1.5 days. Has anyone had this required upgrade completed?

Yes, we just had it done when we were at the factory in Coburg. Ours went quicker than what your letter indicates but they said we had an easier configuration than some.

As I understood it they replaced both of the equalizers and then installed fuses at each battery or battery bank not sure on that part.

    Hope that helps.

I talked to Leon last week about the recall and if I remember correctly, it started around coach 780. Don’t hold me to that number, mine is 732 and not affected.

Here is the NHTSA Recall Listing:

Sure Power, Inc. is recalling certain battery equalizers and DC-DC converters manufactured between January 2000 and Aug. 18, 2013 containing a particular epoxy sealing, aka “potting,” compound, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Sure Power product is identified by the following part numbers: 12025C00, 12025C00-B, 12025E00, 12025E00-B, 12030C20HR, 12030C20HR-B, 12040C00, 12040C00-B, 12040E00, 12040E00-B, 52204, 52206, 52206RB, 52208, 52208P, 52208RB, 52210, 52210-20430K, 52210P, 52210RB, 52210RB-B, 52210RB-T, 52304, 52304P, 52306, 52306RB, 52308, 12040C01. The specific potting compound used in the subject products for insulation was found to be capable of conducting electricity after being exposed to heat.

Once electrically conductive, the material is capable of melting and burning, increasing the risk of a fire.

Sure Power will contact each of its aftermarket customers and notify them of this recall. The vehicle manufacturers that used the affected products as items of original equipment will conduct their own campaigns and notify their owners. Owners will be offered an unaffected battery equalizer or DC-DC converter, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may call Sure Power at 1-855-450-3594 or e-mail Sure Power at recalldc@cooperindustries.com.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

We had the recall done in Coburg in the spring — right after they learned of the recall. In fact, ours was the second coach refitted. It only took about a half day on our H3, but the first one was an XL and that took over day.

On the XL they had to fabricate some new brackets in addition to accessibility problems, so some coaches will take longer than others. It probably is faster now since they have some experience with the refit.

Disregard my early post, mine DOES have the recall model and I’ll notify Leon tomorrow. He said my vintage did not have that Eqalizer, but it for sure does.

Is this one the engine batts or house batts?

    Greg,

From what I understand and saw when they worked on mine it was for the house side.

I’m still trying to sort it out, but looks like mine is the chassis. I have 3 Equalizers and not sure how all that works. I have 2 Vanners and the Sure Power. The Vanners appear to wired in parallel.

    Ben?

One Vanner, and maybe the pair are for the chassis. The chassis equalizer(s) have cables going to the chassis batteries.

For as long as I have had a Prevost the chassis had 100 amps of equalizer dedicated to the four batteries. The orignal coach had a pair of 50 amp equalizers, and the last 2 coaches have had a single 100 amp equalizer. I don’t know of anything that would change to require more than 100 amps unless the Vanners are for the house and the house battery bank requires that capacity to handle AC units run through the alternator via the inverters.

All my 3 coaches used Vanner equalizers, for both the house and chassis.

Here’s the scoop… The Vanner’s are Marathon and there are two because of being able to run to A/C’s off the Inverters and that combination has worked well for them.

The Sure Power got changed out somewhere in the history of the bus, the orginal chassis Vanner probably went bad and someone put this one in the bus. Prevost never used Sure Power, so that took them and Marathon out of the equasion.

After numerous phone call’s to Sure Power, they are sending me a new equalizer, expected time 4 – 6 weeks. Hope the damn things holds up…

Marathon used to utilize the Sure Power brand equalizer, and did not even carry the Vanner brand used on the Prevost shell for engine batteries. The one in the left corner was originally a Vanner, supplied by Prevost. I suppose like someone else mentioned, the original Vanner went bad and was probably replaced my Marathon with a Sure Power equalizer at some point, since that was all they stocked for years.

Marathon installed 1 in the early days, then later two Sure Power equalizers for the house system. The recall involved changing them to Vanners. I am surprised they did not also change the chassis equalizer as well, unless that unit is not in the 12-year recall period.
