New-to-Us-Bus Update #2
Finishing up some maintenance and repair items. We are making progress!
1-Installed new backup camera with better resolution and a wider field of view.
2-Installed the improved Detroit Diesel 50DN alternator vent line kit. DD part #23528624. Intended to help reduce oil leaks from the 50DN alternator. Original DD bulletin #14-60-00. Around 2002-2003 and later this kit was installed as original equipment from the factory.
3-Installed the Detroit Diesel right and left side gear case stiffening brackets. Mentioned here in the “diamond seal” post. DD part #23528306 & #23528307.
Going to check for and fix any potential “rain water” leaks before our first trip in the coach. We’ll pressurize the coach and spray the outside with a soap solution to find the leaks. Fixing them will be the next task.
Still….looking forward to our first trip.

The brackets are to stiffen the left and right side of the gear case on the Series 60 engines produced prior to 2001 to prevent oil leaks between the crankcase and the gear case in the location of the “diamond seal”. Engines after 2001 have these brackets factory installed as OEM. Mine didn’t have the brackets when I got it so I added them at the same time I did the 50DN alternator vent upgrade.
The bracket on one side is is smaller than the bracket on the other side. The reference to the “exhaust side” was just my way of describing which side of the engine the photo was showing instead of me saying “left” or “right” side of the engine. Sorry for the confusion.

is your upgrade for XLIIs, being new design from XLs/rivets or do all pre 2001 motors need this stiffening?

The upgrade applies to Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines built July 2001 or earlier that did not have these gear case stiffening brackets already installed. I don’t believe that it is chassis dependent and I believe that it applies to all trucks, boats, stationary power plants, and coaches including XL’s, XL2’s, and H’s with the DD Series 60.
Here is an excerpt from the Detroit Diesel Service Manual.
In July 2001, new right and left side gear case stiffening brackets were added to provide: reduce engine noise, increase belt driven accessory life, reduce gear case vibration amplitude and reduce wear on the cam thrust plate perimeter seal.
I’m not trying to talk anybody into doing this. Just passing along information as I understand it. Your mileage may vary.

We used the Rear View Safety RVS770. It’s the same camera as the RVS771 but the RVS771 has the RCA connectors included if you need them.

That’s what I thought too. The new parts from Detroit Diesel are the ones that look more blue than green. When I removed the idler bracket for the belt tensioner the area behind it was more blue looking also. I guess the blue fades to the more green look over time.

Thanks for the camera info.
Our current camera was replaced somewhere along the way, but has so
much glare from the reflection of the Lights at night it is totally useless.
