  • New Lights In The Engine Compartment

Posted by Davy on February 19, 2019 at 9:33 am

I have been spending entirely too much time in my engine compartment lately and it reminded me to ask about something I have wondered about for a while.

These lights overhead in the engine compartment are nearly completely useless.

It is an overcast day here and the light from these small fixtures does not make it down to the engine at all, they are so dim. They look bright through the phone camera.

I checked at the switch and they are 24 volts. Has anyone replaced them with LED lights? If so, what did you use? There is room up there even for a light bar. Which brings up the next question. What is above there that might prevent putting screws through the metal? If I replaced these puny lights with something bigger I would want to make sure they could be secured well.

I added a light bar of LED’s. But I used a separate circuit from one of the posts, fused it and added a switch just for the light bar.

It goes almost the entire width of the door opening and is so bright I believe we could do surgery under the light.

    Davey,

We found some high quality 24 volt LEDs (on Craigslist) and installed them as a direct replacement for the incandescent units…used short sheet metal screws. We did so in every compartment and they are bright. We have a couple left over that I can send you, but wouldn’t be able to do so for about 6 weeks.

Thanks, Jon. Can I ask why the new wire and separate circuit? These are switched from the box above the engine and the only other thing on that switch that I can see is the light in that box.

I do not know if I am writing to Linda or John, but thank you for the pictures and the kind offer. That is very similar to what I was thinking of using. I have found some on Amazon that are not expensive.

    Thanks again,

I left the original lights and did not want to add more to that circuit. When you next come to Jeff’s get in touch and I can show you, and we can catch a lunch.

You will have to have a car capable of getting up our driveway.wink

When I say it is bright it is very bright and I wanted to make certain I did not overload the original circuit.

You say that as if it is a certainty that I will be coming back to Jeff’s, and it is.cool I am hoping he picks me over thousands of other applicants for Buddy’s old job. Is no news still good news?

So Jon, did you research the tanning bed salons in your area to find out which number to put on before going under the lights?

Dan, I have to use sunscreen when I work on my engine. The lights are so bright I can see Tom spending the dues money. That’s bright.

I did mine and just moved the switch wire from a 24 volt source to 12v and used 12v led lights.
