New issue Webasto
Posted by steve on December 11, 2017 at 7:29 amDoes anyone have any ideas on why My Webastowebasto pops the circuit breaker on my Inverter once in a while. It seems to happen when itWebasto has been off for quite a while. It happened this morning again.I run some electric heaters and last nitenitenitenm Webasto did not need to fire. It tried to fire this morning and shortly my red light went out.I found the circuit breaker popped on the inverter.I re-set and it runs fine now. This seems to happen on cold starts when it has been off for a while. Jeff replaced the control box previously and have no issues with it firing, just pops the breaker once in a while. after it warms up and turns on and off during the day no more issues with the breakers…..Thanks………………Steve

If that was happening on my coach my first reaction would be to measure the current draw when the Webasto is turned on. If it is excessive (based on current ratings for all components) I would look for the issue within that system.
If it is not my focus would shift to the breaker on the inverter. It is not uncommon for circuit breakers to trip prematurely as they age.

Steve, I don’t think the popping inverter breaker has anything to do with the webasto. On my bus, the webasto is 100% 12v. The inverters can be switched off and the webasto system will operate perfectly.

Don is right, but there are a lot of nuances that play a part. What is the condition of the batteries and are they fully charged? The Webasto is going to put a load on them and if the inverter has a high charge current set in it or the batteries are always in bulk charge just adding the Webasto load could be the trigger to trip the breaker.

I assume my batteries are O.K. I am running 3 portable heaters on low. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it .For The last couple years when not using portable heaters in Florida, sometimes the webasto would try to fire but would not and I always found the one breaker on the Invverter popped. I reset and the Webasto would fire up and be O.K. for a while. On my Xantrex control panels inside the coach they both read CHARGE / INVERT / Float ……13.5 DC VOLTS . I don’t and never have pushed any buttons on these panels. I leave them alone as I bought it. I don’t know enough about them. I’m just trying to make it through the winter. I probably should buy new batteries in the spring if I find some place to do it…………Thanks Steve

For any information to help it requires an understanding of how a coach is set up.
I presume small heaters are either plugged into the outlets in which case the power might be coming through the inverters if the generator is not running or the coach is not on shore power. But if the coach has 120V power coming in, then heaters are unlikely to be getting power through inverters.
Each converter does things different than other converters. Some basic design principles are used, but there can be differences to make responses to questions invalid unless the person responding has an understanding of the converter and how the coach was set up.
When asking questions it often helps to add a basic description of the systems to get more accurate responses.

I don’t remember my CC setup, but you may have a 120v Webasto circulation pump that is causing your circuit breaker problem.

I have had problems with the breakers before.
I am sure Steve is talking about one of the breakers on a panel between the inverters that CC fabricated,it has nothing to do with the inverters.
The Webasto on that vintage CC works solely off of the house batteries and is not connected to house power weather inverted or plugged into shore power.
From my experience whenever I had a circuit breaker issue with the Webasto it turned out to be a circulation pump. A further indication might be Steve said when it has not run for some period of time it will trip the circuit breaker. This is and indication of a dragging pump motor. Just like some fan motors when they are old or have not been run for some time they tend to start very slowly which really pushes the amp draw way up.
The M&P pumps CC used have seals that when starting to fail will leak coolant into the motor and you know what that will do. They do make seal kits. New motors are around $2800 or so. M&P is still in business.
I will have to check this next statement but I am sure the Webasto itself is fused on a control card inside the ECC cabinet in the first bay.
The control card number 17 is the hydronic heat control card and has three fuses on it.

Don ,I don’t know what voltage the Webastos run on. All I know is on the Inverter in 4th bay there are two circuit breakers on the face of the Inverter. Both are labeled WEBASTO .All I know for sure is if the one breaker is popped the Webasto won’t fire……………….Thanks for your reply…….Steve

I think Buddy’s answer is the problem. I have spoke by phone to buddy and He indicated last week the circulation pumps might be drawing excessive amps in the cold. They probably should be re-placed this spring. If you all don’t know it, Buddy is a Country Coach “guru”. He should be put on the payroll somewhere, I just don”t know where………………..Steve

Chiming in since I’m right in the middle of it now. Webasto was popping the 30 amp fuse. So I snipped the two wires that powered the one circulation pump (MP Pumps Fraser, Michigan) located in the engine bay. Webasto runs fine now that, that pump is out of the circuit. Ohmed the bad circulation pump to find it alone was drawing 18 amps at 24 volts meaning there was only 12 amps available to run five heat exchanger fans in the cabin, the other circulation pump next to Webasto burner, and the motor inside the Webasto unit. So, bought two new MP Pumps and will swap the one I can reach next to Webasto myself, and let the young, skinny, flexible guy swap the other.
Point is, Buddy is right on target.
