A couple of our favorite foodie things in areas you’re staying

Near Wild Duck – if you are into craft beers visit Allagash Brewery (we love their Tripel). Lunch at Duckfat – be sure to get the duck fat fries (rated one of the top 10 french fries in the country). We had an amazing duck confit panini to go with our fries. My goodness, we could spend a month in the Portland area just for the food (but would be the size of a small apartment building if we did)!

Near Saltwater Farm – Primo in Rockland. We have been going to Primo almost every year for well over a decade – it’s where we celebrate our anniversary if we can (even though it means well over an hour or maybe even an hour and a half drive from where we summer). Melissa Kelly is an amazing chef. This is nose to tail (if you wish), they raise everything they can (including heritage pork and chickens), but it is also unbelievable food. A nice end to a day if you do Owl’s Head Light and the Transportation Museum.

If you’re struggling with places to stay on the route home (assuming Thomaston is your last stop in Maine) and decide to chill for Labor Day weekend – call our dear friends at Palmyra Golf and RV resort in Palmyra, Maine. Tell them Michelle and Steve from Texas sent you 😉 Sites are all back-in, FHU are all 50 amp. Gravel/grass but generally very quiet. It’s not fancy, but it’s our home base for the summer and convenient to I95. Plus if you need diesel there’s an Irving truck stop in Newport. Oh, and the golf is extremely reasonable, especially for “campah’s”. If you want satellite, B row is better than A since A backs up to the woods. We should be there in our usual seasonal spot in C row once we get on the road this year.

Before I forget, one last suggestion for this post – for the short distance you’re in NH on I95, if you’re into wine, consider stopping at the NH state liquor store – look for the blue sign with gold lettering.

the NH State liquor stores on I-95 North and South. Us Granite State inhabitants need all the tourist money we can get!

The good thing about those state owned and operated stores is that they are right off of the Interstate and offer ample parking for any size rig (except, perhaps, the store at the Portsmouth traffic circle).

These stores are quite large with an even larger inventory of wines and booze.

But, do your homework and know your usual prices because not everything being sold here is less expensive than what is sold at the corner liquor store.

For example, my favorite, a Chilean Red “Los Vascos” typically sells for around $12-13 per bottle at the State stores.

I have found the same wine for under $10 elsewhere.

Anyways, a visit to New England is worth it almost any time of the year. Except, November, December, January, February, March and usually April, too.

That is, unless, you enjoy wearing Long Johns … 🙂

I don’t mnd long johns as much as snow (anything beyond the occasional dusting for effect is WAAYY too much for this southern gal!) and frozen extremities! After a day or two housebound, I begin to resemble Jack Nicholson in The Shining – So I think I will stick to the warmer months!

Y’all have been amazing help! We do love to eat so thanks much for the help on tried and true places – if you ever get down our way – especially Charleston area – we can pay you back. Thanks too for the tip about the NH ABC stores – will see about checking them out as well – I am more of a craft beer drinker than wine and Joe prefers bourbon straight up but it is nice to have a bottle or two of wine for supper with friends…

Wish we could just ‘park it’ till Labor Day is over but we both need to be back here for Tues so we will need to head on out…besides football season in the South will have started and we will be due in Auburn with the bus by the next weekend…What I really wish is that we could take the whole month of August and head north – after the tips about NH I am sorry that we aren’t going to be able to spend time there as well. It’s on the list for next time.

That’s why I have my Good Sam Rand McNally RV GPS. I put my settings in and it warns me of places that I can’t go.

I’ll add this too… Hopefully they have fixed the roads up there from the winter. I was up there in February and broke a wheel because of all the potholes in the road. Some of them felt like the entire bus could fall in them. But it sure is beautiful up there.
