  • Need advice on the cost to rebuild/replace 17 Kw

    I was reading over all the old posts and I was trying to determine the cost of rebuilding Or replacing a 17 KW generator for a 2001 Marathon Prevost h3 generator with 8500 hours on it. I read the importance of never starting the generator with a full load and therefore the maintenance is very important. It appears a rebuild is somewhere between six and $9000 and a total replacement could be up to $20,000 for 17 KW Generator Are my estimates correct…..?..??

    At 8500 hours, unless the generator was abused, that generator has reached about 20 to 25% of its expected life. Is the generator broke?

    Generator still functional but small oil leak. Thank you for your response the generator is still functional but apparently there’s some small oil leak. Obviously I’ll get a full rundown with Gill Johnson and Prevost maintenance facility

    So you really think the cost to rebuild or replace a generator is a reasonable amount to spend to stop an oil leak???????????????

    Our Kubota/PowerTech 17.5 has 13,600 hrs on it now. It doesn’t burn or leak any oil. We do used oil analysis on it regularly. 3+ yrs ago, at 12,874 hrs, the analysis report showed high copper and lead. I took this to mean it was time for rod bearings. This is normal for a diesel at “half” life. So I easily replaced the rod bearings. All used oil analysis reports since then have all been good/normal. We change the oil and filter every 200-250 hrs with a name brand HD diesel 15w40.

    Depends on where the oil is leaking from, but it wouldn’t bother me too much. As another poster said, doing oil analysis can tell you quite a bit of what’s going on with it. Amsoil has a good test pump and kit. Get five test kits (big Detroit oil, big Detroit coolant, Allison trans lube, generator oil, and generator coolant). Get separate clear hoses at the hardware store for each one so you don’t have cross contamination. When you see the coach take it for a half hour drive, run the generator during the same time, when you get back draw the samples, and then send them in. My most recent sample were turned around in a week or so.

    +1 on fix the oil leak, get an oil analysis done, run the heck out of it. Should run 30k hours with proper maintenance

    Early this month I sent another used oil sample from the Kubota/PowerTech17.5kw genny off to Blackstone Labs for analysis. Got it back this evening. All is well. Oil & filter this time was Shell Rotella T4 15w40 and a Fram Ultra XG3593A w/224 hrs. Genny had 13,522 hrs when sample was taken

    Here are Blackstones comments: “DON: The engine didn’t even notice the additional hours on the oil this time around — metals are just as low, if not lower, than either of the previous samples that were run fewer hours. Clearly this engine is a great candidate for extended oil use, and we see no reason not to run the oil even longer next time. The TBN of 6.5 shows there’s still plenty of additive left to support a longer run. There was a bit of fuel in the oil last time, but here the flashpoint is high enough to show no measurable fuel dilution. We think up to 300 hours is doable for this generator. Nice!”
