  • My spare 50DN Alternator

Posted by DON on May 4, 2023 at 2:27 pm

Last year when I found out DelcoRemy was no longer supporting their/my 24v/270amp 50DN alternator I began buying up new ole stock on ebay. Took it all too a local rebuilder and had it put together and tested. Now I’ll never need it.

I do plan to put this newly assembled unit on the bus and take the one that’s currently on the bus and have it freshened.

    Don:

You must have been down the road of keeping something for years, never needing it, then disposing it only to need it the next day.

    Hate it when that happens.

My understanding is they replaced the 50dn with the 50dn+ this goes from 24v 270amp to 450amp.

I’ve heard mixed thoughts on high amp alternators. Some say they sap engine power while some say no impact.

    What is the opinion here?

I have the 50dn that’s 12v which I think was 24v converted to 12v but the plate is worn off. I have a wakespeed ws500 controller for it so I can see the output and control by temp. I don’t feel any difference when it’s running full power or not. Get close to 3000w from it to charge the batteries.

BTW the wakespeed allows me to set all kinds of controls and charging profiles like limiting the output if I want. I have it set to wait a few minutes before it turns on.
