I cannot remember what the book says but it is in my opinion a good starting point. I use the dip stick as my reference point and if that makes my oil level a little over or under that is OK because when I monitor oil level it is pretty easy to relate to the full mark and not some point above or below it.

I agree with Gerald because that is what I buy every time and I know I am not building up an inventory or having to go get another gallon or two from time to time.

Just so my method is understood here it is:: I drain the oil and remoove the filters. I fill two new filters with oil and install them. I drain the oil reserve tank into the engine. I fill the crankcase using the oill fill tube. I put the remaining oil in the reserve tank. I run the engine and check for leaks at the filters. I check oil level after about ten minutes, and adjust it with oil from the reserve tank if necessary.

I end up using all 10 gallons, the reserve tank ends up full, and my oil is at the right level.

And the Delo 400 25w-40 is correct for that engine,What about that extra gallon stored up top is that used? or leave it empty. By the way Gerald those ramps work great had to get under for diesel leak.

Art, I mentioned the reservoir in my post above. I have it full. I drain it into the engine at each oill change so it has fresh oill in it. It is not adding or deleting oill to the 40 quarts Don mentioned.
