  • muffler mount?

Posted by Bob on August 17, 2013 at 6:35 pm

The shell I bought had no muffler.(salvage shell) I looked in book and they have no good picture. I have the muffler in place and see how it bolts up. I have tabs on frame and holes in muffler. My question is ?? Is there any rubber mounting material involved? If so it is just a spacer between the mounting bracket and muffler? Any help here would be appreciated. I’m lost as I haven’t traveled this road before. Bob

Bob, I replaced my rear hanger as the rubber had seperated from upper mounting bolt. Using part of a mud flap I cut a new strap. The mud flap I used had threads inbeded in its construction. This gave the strap superior strength.

There seemed to be a lot of weight for this single strap. Doubling the strap made more sense and increased some stiffness of the hanger. I cut two (2) like straps mounted side by side, changed to longer bolts, added flat washers next to rubber.

Been in place about three years now…

So muffler is suspended by rubber straps? Makes sense. I found a piece of rubber still under one bracket. I didn’t know how firm to make instal. Have better Idea now. I have alot of conveyor belt to make straps out of. About how long? Is there any metal between brackets on bus frame and muffler? Bob

A piece cut from an old truck bed mat works good too.

Support the muffler so you get clearance with satisfactory air space. Don’t know if you have a pipe tip on discharge pipe.

Maybe your discharge is under the bus pointed downward. Ours is out the side so that has to be taken into account.

I’ve seen guys use chain links to hang exhaust systems. They add and subtract links as they go getting the clearance.

Rubber straps then made using length of chain as their guide.

I had existing brackets to work from . You might have to make bridge brackets then bolt straps to them.
