If a person was thinking about a coach purchase and the possibility of a MT LLC, who does everyone use?

    Thanks

Don’t know about the Montana deal but Purchased a one owner coach here in Texas. I bit the bullet when I bought it years ago and registered it in Texas. Paid cash for the coach and the tax was a killer when i went down to change into my name. License plates are another $534 a year but that does include personnel plates.

Bennett, they are the experts. Hang on Mikee, you’re now going to get flamed by some that insist you pay your local Gestapo mega bucks so they can build a park.

I ran across this on youtube the other day. The guy is a lawyer questioning the use of a Montana LLC.

I am 100% in favor of denying government money it typically uses in ways I really object to. So if someone has a means by which the government wizards are kept away from money I applaud them.

But going the Montana route has risks and if it is to be done make sure the effort minimizes the risks. Some states want your money and have been relentless in going after it, and often they can not only get the taxes due, they impose some serious fines.

Do your homework. Do not take legal advice from owners who have just been lucky. The last thing you want is to be a visible target.

Mikee, do the full Monty… Let Bennett set you up with bus, toad, driver’s license and insurance recommendations. That is the only way we would do it if we were making a big purchase.

Our last 2 coaches were on a montana LLC. I have a lady in Montana hat looks after this . She worked for a lawyer for years. Her fees are less than half of what the others charge. Very efficient. Be aware that some sdtates are actively looking for residents with MT plates and charging them with some type of infraction. E mail me for info on that lady.

Once 10yrs old in Indiana the plates are $49 a year plus a county road tax of $30. Point being You might check your home state if Fl is not it.

The proper way to do this is to:

    1) Buy land in Montana

    2) Establish Residency

    3) Get a Montana driver’s license

    4) Register your other vehicles in Montana

    5) Plan on spending at least 180 days per year in Montana

When you’re pulled over by law enforcement, just tell them the truth that you’re a legitimate Montana resident.

All kidding aside, check with your tax accountant on this topic as it’s tricky and some States have become wise to the scheme. IMHO, the penalties are not worth the risk.

Make sure your toad is also registered in Montana… highway patrol look for Montana bus plates pulling a toad from another state.. it’s a red flag.. also get Montana driver’s licence.

We went to an FMCA Rally once and as we were leaving they were pulling over all the Montana plates.. have no idea of the end result…rumor said lots of fines but have no idea of the truth value there.

Just not worth it to us.

    Good luck to you.

All States don’t like them. I have California and Texas friends who have used these Montana LLC’s for years and no problems. There is always the big “it could be a problem”. I chose to pay the sales tax, register in Missouri and not worry about it.

I would imagine a Lawyer would have a field day for someone that got pulled over with no other reason for the stop except a Montana tag. Obeying the speed limit, safe driving, current tags and no other reason for probable cause except the harassment factor. I don’t know of any state where it’s unlawful to have a Montana plate on the coach and another state for the toad. I understand all the variables, but I think mostly the ones that get in trouble are due to a pissed off neighbor with an ax to grind.

By the way, 200 Prevosts at the Expo, Montana was well represented.

As others have said, call Bennett. Whether it works for you will depend on all the details. A Montana LLC works for some, but not for all.

I’ve been reading about the virtues and pitfalls of Montana registration for years. I realize the potential risks as well as awesome rewards.

I have yet to see anyone post anything about getting “caught” with a Montana registration they couldn’t defend. You think by now we’d see a post by someone who parked at a campground next to a guy who knew a guy who got caught and paid a huge fine and penalty.

FTW we registered in the Great State of Wisconsin.

We didn’t want to raise any flags, so we registered ours at home in Wisconsin also. 5% state tax and .5% county tax, and only $1320 a year!

And our other vehicles are plated there too!😉
