  • Monitor Replacement in 2000 Marathon XL

Posted by Ed on October 31, 2020 at 9:16 pm

    New project…

The #6 Dash Panel monitor has been replaced twice in the coach since new. The two replacements have always been some sort of marine monitors with just VGA and RCA input. So doing some searching I found a Professional Monitor from a company call Beetronics in Deleware, They offered several sizes of monitors in 7 inch to over 12 inch in both 4:3 and 16:9 formats in High definition and 4K. They have several inputs (HDMI, BNC, RCA, VGA, USB) which will give me options to select videos from a Ios device to play. The resolution is very good on new monitor. Standard shipping was fast to Texas 4 days.

Since the video computer in the Techlink system is 20 year old technology I elected to use the 10 inch screen in a 4:3 format so it marries up to Techlink. This monitor works off of 12VDC so switching and screen outputs is the same as old. What is nice is the remote control and additional inputs. This is the first posting of two. I am getting rid of the boat anchor Marathon installed that held monitor so the monitor is flush with face of dash rather then recess. I will post as a follow up as I need to make a sheetmetal support that goes behind Wood veneered #6 Dash Panel.

Only thing left is decorative cover. I can now remove monitor without removing #6 Dash Panel.

    Very good Resolution

Nice, was it difficult to marry the Tech link?

I could not figure out how to interface the screen to switchinputs. The original screen had been modified internally.

    Any help appreciated

There is no difficulty in connecting Techlink VGA output to a montior with a VGA input. The difficulty would come if you use a monitor that does not have VGA input and then you have to use an adaptor.

The display of screen information comes through the Techlink video computer. In my bus located above the driver in cabinet. This video computer takes the information from generator and water bay boards and converts it into a video signal outputting on a VGA cable to monitor (My bus not yours).

I went through a very extensive reboot and replacement of both bay boards and some switches in bus this past summer because they had lost there minds after twenty years. Only Marthon and the folks at Techlon can figure this out. Techlon’s Brian and Sue Gabel manufactured this system for Marathon. So don’t put you head up a cows butt (Marathon) to see a good steak ask the butcher (Brian Gabel). He truly knows how this system operates.

One of the best features of the Beetronics monitor is to take video inputs from a remote device and display it after selecting the new input with Beetronics remote. Here are screen shots of displaying the input from Rand McNally OVD7 GPS on bigger monitor using a Insignia Cable NS-HG1182 HDMI Micro (GPS) to HDMI (monitor). Thus I can put OverDrive 7 GPS to my left freeing up window space and just look down to my right.
