  • Mini Airbag Tensioner Leak etc Replacement

Posted by DON on August 19, 2021 at 11:12 am

    Thank You Jon W.

The evening before departing on a 1000 mile 2 day trip, I found a few problems with the mini airbag belt tensioner for the three belts between the engine crank pulley and the 90* gearbox.

1 – the mini airbag was leaking bad enough I could hear it. The metal band wasn’t tight enough anymore.
2 – the 5/16″ course thread bolt that screws into the plastic on one end had pulled the threads,
3 – and the belts had stretched enough to hit the mechanical stop.
I didn’t want to delay our departure for days awaiting new mini airbag and belts. So I reviewed Jon W. article on PC about removing the mini airbag tensioners and replacing with mechanical tensioners. Then a quik trip to the hardware store and $5 worth of parts were installed, and we were good to go again. I installed the old belts I carry as spares and the trip was made without issue.
Parts needed: one 4″ by 3/8″ carriage bolt, a few washers, nuts, and 1/8″ pipe thread cap.
Next I’m gonna replace the other 2 mini airbag tensioners with mechanical tensioners. Then there will be 3 fewer potential aux system air leaks.
I’ll cap off the tensioner system air supply, but leave all the plumbing in place in case I change my mind.

    Don:

Add shaft locks to keep nuts in place. Easy insurance. Ask me how I know. Mike
