Member Directory – Any Interest
While
dodging rain drops at Foley, the question came up about a member
directory. Not a bad idea for those that want to be on a list shared
by other members with the same preference. Now before you stick pins
in my Voo Doo Doll, this member list would be private and only those
wanting to participate would be involved.The
list could include a photo, screen name, address if wanted, e-mail
address, phone number and general information that you wish to share
with other members. The concept was brought to Jon and I, we won’t
mention any names yet and one of the reasons was to recall members
you have met and have a source in order to make contact or refresh
your memory at a Rally. Let’s face it, we all look at folks we’ve met
and the chance of remembering all the names is a stretch at best. I
was called Jon one day, gasp, I’m the young one.We
have a Private Forum that is dead.
Folks wanted it, we developed it and it fizzled out quickly. So the
privacy part is already there and developed, it would be a simple
matter of re-formatting it to fit a Member Directory option. The
method to join would be invitation only and all of that would have to
be worked out, not a big deal.This
would have to be administered by a few members, Jon and I just don’t
have the time to take on another function. Keeping up with your dues
is a full time job for both of us.Any
thoughts? -

No interest in member directory

Since
it will be PRIVATE and for members only, I think it would work very well. I
will volunteer to carry some of the load if others are interested in a
Directory. I can work up a form, get you and Jon to check it over, then members can fill it out and email it to me. I will even set up a seperate email account to accomodate it. Then a simple transfer of data to the existing forum file.

A couple of months ago I brought this up and Jon gave some past history and very valid concerns. In the scenario you outlined Tom, it can work. With PC’s commitment to protecting the list of those who elect to be on it and it being on a private part of the site, there should be enough security to maintain confidentiality from nonmembers. The greatest risk would be from those members, be they regular, commercial or sponsors who comprise its integrity.
We will welcome those passing through our area to touch base with us if they have issues, questions or just want to say hello or visit. We will begin traveling in a couple of months for extended periods of time over the next few years. When there are others in a given area willing to do the same for us or any part there of we would be most appreciative. As we say in South Louisiana, “Un coup De main”, “A helping hand”. Sooner or later we will need one. The sharing on this site already attest to that.
If this gets off the ground, I would be willing to assist in any way I am capable. With that said I am not very astute with computers but will do what I can.

Another idea you may consider is allowing is the following: Since PC requires registration already, allow the members to establish their own profile which any “member” of PC may access. This would act like a directory, containing only information provided by the member, with no management required.
The profile could have numerous fillable options, such as age, email, website/blog, phone #, favorite sports teams, avatar (yourself, your coach, whatever), biography of yourself/spouse, etc. But in this case, the member reveal only what they want of themselves, allowing all the other members (no non-members) to take a look at their background, etc. If a current member doesn’t want to reveal anything about themselves, they simply don’t fill in any of the boxes.
So, right now in the forum, when you click on the upper right corner to someone’s username, it takes you to their email, if the member enabled it. You could simply add an option to that which states “profile.” Again, if not filled out, no harm, no foul.
This way, there is no real management of this directory required, otherthan someone setting it up for the first time.

I hope everyone understand fully there is no such thing as a private forum.
I hope everyone understands that all it takes is one person to share their password with someone and the entire forum and its membership is now in the public domain.
Tom and I know because we visit sites we are not allowed to visit and we have people reading who are not registered reading PC. I’ll try to say this so there is no room for misinterpretation……….I think anyone that thinks creating lists of members with personal information and posting it such that access is “limited” is kidding themselves. If a list of members or rally attendees or anything that contains private information is posted to a “secure” spot on this site or any other site it will end up being accessed by people that should never have that information. We had it happen to us on another site and that is why we do not allow anyone but Tom and I (and our web guru) to see our membership list, or why we do not have PMs (private messages are not private).
I will not impede anyone from moving ahead with this on the “private forum” but I want anyone who lists their private information to understand that people who should never access that information will eventually get there.

Although I have no personal issue with listing some of my personal information here, it would be limited. But, I would concur with Jon that your personal information is “never” secure once posted or, for that matter, once you access the internet.
Cyber security is a topic too vast to cover here, but, if you are online “anywhere” you will have a digital footprint, which can expose your data to various entities, regardless if the data is supposedly protected.

I would have no objection to a directory. I would have little objection to sharing my email address and phone number, I’ve done that on a number of other sites I belong to (Garage Journal Forum and Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs).
If a directory were made available, I would recommend that it include basic information about the coach if the member has one (year, converter, length, XL vs H, make if SOB). I would use that information to reach out to someone who has a coach similar to ours. I wouldn’t want to trouble a Marathon or Vantare owner with my few Liberty quesitions. I’m sure those guys have enough problems of their own. Someone buying a coach in my area might want to contact me or if they were buying one similar to ours have questions.
If someone didn’t want the phone calls, include only an email address.
If a member wants complete privacy or lives off the grid, they don’t have to participate in the directory.

You just described our current availability of information on the PC site.
Any member can add a signature line which lists anything they want, including the items you stated, and if they choose to receive email communications from members they can enable their email address.
For those who choose to keep their email address private, if another member wishes to communicate with you, they can go through Tom or I by sending an email from someone who wishes to communicate with you, and we will forward it to your email address that was used to register. We will not give it out, and if you do wish to respond that is entirely up to you. That way we are keeping email addresses private.

I understand that Jon. But to find “someone” with a 1999 Liberty XLV I have to plow through all the posts to find that needle in the haystack or build my own database.

I fully understand what you are saying, and I encourage owners of specific conversions to network with other owners. But what you seek is a searchable data base and I did not get the impression the initial listing of members would be more than just that of rally attendees so those who were at a rally could remember the names of people they met or have contact information.
If someone is really desperate for hard work a few hundred hours going through 36,000 posts harvesting information from posts and signature lines would provide the information members are allowing to be public.

To Dick’s point,
Not sure if you want to create additional forums, but is it too cumbersome to create separate forums to discuss a specific “converter”? Liberty, Marathon, Featherlite, Royal, CC, etc.
It’s definitely adding more forums than what is available now, but it takes you directly to members with the same “converter” and same issues. In essence, this creates networking by converter.

I have a little different look at this…..
My ID stolen 4 years ago….Looking for something to keep you busy for 2 weeks-month ? That will do it.
My wife girlfriend had her IRS account compromised. Applying for her refund she is notified her refund check has already been cashed. She can never file electronic, she must now file manual at address furnished by IRS.
3 days ago soft hit on our credit card, which triggers card cancel “again”.
Jon and Tom have done a great job of protection on this site with very few problems to date. But with the constant battle they admit every once in a while something get’s through.
I don’t want to throw a bucket of water on your fire….But in today’s world is this in best interest to PC members ?
