Hey Bob,
Good to read your May update on your coach build. I just want to give you a learning opportunity while I’m in Evansville this September. Now I’m not doing a home built because I’m not knowledgeable about things electrical mostly. However, I have started a project to remove the paint up to the window bottom rivet line on my XL. Just in case I messed up, after all this is my first effort at paint removal and then, Polishing Stainless. I have been told that can’t be done. That is one of my triggers so I started the work on the rear engine bay doors. I left one as built by CC and started on the right hand door. I found a Citris based paint remover that worked reasonably well and would not alarm any local environment protectionistas. The problem with polishing a previously painted surface of stainless, an etchant primer is applied first to get some “teeth” for the final coating to adhere to the stainless. Now I’ll admit after paint removal I worked very gingerly doing the polishing. By hand too, I found that to be best, don’t ask how I determined that to be best.
I started with a 1000 grit wet dry paper and sanded only the area where paint was removed, by hand. I did not see any damages inflicted so on to the 2000 grit wet dry paper, sanding the same areas. Now it was on to using the drill, buffing wheels, and Black rouge. Black is a quick cutting rouge. I used a hard buff, denim with closely spaced stitching. Started only working on the sanded areas, later expanded buffing to the lower half of the door. Next was a Brown rouge with a little softer buff, then a Red rouge and finally a Light Green rouge with a very soft buff for bringin out the color of stainless and making it a mirror finish. I was pleased, especially since I did not get the metal too “hot.”
So I have proceeded to the drivers side radiator access door. This one has multiple air vents and the rear engine bay doors were smooth all over. By September I will have some areas in need of polishing. So if you want to have a learning experience, just keep some Donut Bank Fruit Fritters on hand for the instructor!
Keep up your good works. Looking forward to meeting you and your coach come September.
