Saw the largest Tug in the country, 241′ with a beam of 58′ named the “Mississippi.” Here’s the specs…

The M/V Mississippi is a working towboat for the USACE Memphis District. Ninety percent of the time it is moving barges, equipment and supplies in support of mat sinking operations. It also serves as an inspection boat for the Mississippi River Commission (MRC) during a high- and low-water inspection trip each year. Commissioners hold meetings at river towns in the boat’s hearing room, which can seat 115 people. Its dining room has a capacity of 85 people. The boat has 22 staterooms and can handle 150 passengers. The Corps also uses it as a “giant floating ambassador”.[1]

    Tom,

Did you try to set them up with the fuel discount program?

How cool. These things can be scarry! Come around a turn in an oscured waterway and greet one of these things with 6 barges being pushed (3 deep and 2 wide). Today, they have a system (AIS) to chart these vessels on your chartplotter. Back in the day they would simply radio their location using local landmarks not necessarily known to boats just passing through.

Al, some of these are so long and wide they take all of navigable waters in some of the turns. In many cases, they are not detectable by raday. AIS is a real plus, if not a must have.
