I admit to a great deal of cynicism brought about by watching other drivers, but re-read the sign carefully. Now imagine the mental midgets we see on our roads.

How many of those folks are going to think their vehicle has to be at least that tall (or more), and not less than that tall too fit under the bridge. I can easily see how some folks will be reading that message and getting it wrong.

We once owned a factory in and industrial area and that meant a lot of truck traffic. In that area was a RR bridge of 12′ 9″ actual. It was listed boldly on signs on the bridge as well as about a block prior to the bridge as 11′ 9″. The discrepancy was intentional because the city had heavy average winter snow accumulations which were almost never building on the streets and roads, but were compensated for with a lower clearance height listing.

It was common for trucks to hit the bridge. Despite having a foot greater actual clearance than listed every year trucks would get wedged under the bridge, or loads would get knocked off trucks, or pieces such as exhaust stacks or wind fairings or other tall parts would get smashed, broke or knocked off.

Ironically, immediately before the bridge in both directions there were streets to the left off the street leading under the bridge so even with warnings and streets ideally placed to avoid the bridge our office which looked toward the bridge often was entertained by idiots who tried to get under the bridege.
