Louisiana
We’re thinking about spending some time in Louisiana and realize there is probably more to Louisiana than the French Quarter and Bourbon Street.
Then I ran across this on FB this morning. How accurate is this? Is there really a North and South Louisiana with a demilitarized zone?
I just don’t want to end up in the “wrong place”. Looking forward to hearing from Buddy, Tommy, Brady, and the others on the PC Forum who are from Louisiana.

Nothing could be more ridiculous.
The only thing separating Northern La from the Southern regions is cuisine. The Southern area has more Cajun type food and people…

Me and my Guys worked from Morgan City on the Gulf Coast to nothern/central Alexandria, Louisiana in the pines over the years when my Welding Business was up and running. Folks down south said look out for those Redbones from the North. The Northern Folks said watch out for those coon Azzes. They didn’t trust each other. I loved um all. Nice Friendly Folks.

Some of the best food in the world! I walk around with a fork in my hand every where I go in Louisiana.

A couple years back, we were staying at Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort and made a day trip down to Des Allemands, LA…..took an airboat ride tour of the swamp….great fun. Would urge that for a good outing…for my money, I’d skip Bourbon St….spend your money at some of the terrific restuarants in N.O.

Lot of truth to those comments as anything north of Alexandria just as soon be considered a different culture and land. Cajun / creole culture, food, music and the general southern comforts stop about there… Won’t find much genuine crawfish or pork boudin, jambalya and creole food outside of south LA . That being said, lots to do with music and food festivals in spring and fall as summers are hot and humid and best spent elsewhere… We have a number of attractions to come visit from Antebellum homes, historic cajun villages, and world famous Tabasco factory and gardens. You won’t go hungry in New Orelans as lots to see as the World War II Museum is one of the best historic museums in the country. As good as any of the Smithsonian’s in my opinion. Many great restaurants with jazz, zedeco and cajun music and plenty of warm water seafood…. oysters, shrimp, crabs and crawfish….
I grew up in Morgan City close to the swamps and bayous that feed in the Gulf of Mexico as if you like fishing, hunting and the outdoors, this is a place for you!! Just watch an episode of “Swamp People” and it is about that real!!
Now i have made myself hungry again!!
Buddy has great people, food and culture up in Monroe but it is not south LA

Anyone entering the DMZ needs heavy armament to proceed further South through the boarder. Nothing below 50 caliber is suggested and preferably fully automatic weapons of all kinds.
It would be very helpful if you can speak French (the coon ass kind) and when you get stopped at the check points be sure and offer red beans and rice or a bowl of gumbo to the armed inspectors, a $100.00 bill in one hand would certainly get you by as well. Kind of like Mexico.
Another suggestion would be to be playing very loudly on your Bose system music by the likes of Pete Fountain, Louie Armstrong, Doug Kershaw, Jo-El Sonnier but leave the Lennon Sisters at home. (send those CD’s to Jon)
You may also consider going to the sun beds at home for a couple of weeks prior to your trip so your skin tone will blend in and be all wrinkled and make you more official looking. Just a little darker tint than the yanks (Yankee, 1 a: a native or inhabitant of North Louisiana) (any area north of Alexandria) from up north. And be sure and color your hair midnight black.
Owning property in 6 parishes south of I10, I have to obtain a special permit to access since I am a northerner from the I20 region. Then I am chaperoned. The last time I went to Terrebonne Parish I had to call 911 and they hung up on me.
Andre and Ann can attest to all I have written, Brady and the gang down there are biased since they live there.
If you insist on going to N. O. some of the best places to eat, IMHO, would be Popeyes’s for southern style chicken, Long Jon Silvers for your fish and shrimp requirements and for the best steak in town visit Logan’s in Metairie.

Don’t know about first liar, but attended a wedding (long story) of one of the temp helpers we hired and ended up south of Houma and just outside Dulac on a Saturday night. If you know the south there it’s swamp anyway you look and those big Lizards were everywhere. Actually had folks looking for those alligators so it wouldn’t eat the drunks. Musta been 200 or 300 swamp people. I tried to leave early ,no sir they said. About 10.30 pm , 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity the fights broke out as both sides of wedding party, and they were all related, trying to kill each other. Should have seen that fiasco. Still have nightmares. The Groom and His brothers got me to my truck. They didn’t like me, a West Texas Boy, being there in the first place. Remember looking at my rearview mirror and those big temporary flood lights just a shining. If I lying, I’m dying!

If you carry around a shrimp po-boy, you can get around anywhere in southern LA.
Make sure to smuggle out some boudain.

When I was growing up as a kid just outside Naw Awlins, we all thought anything north of Baton Rouge was Yankee country. I was 19 years old before I found out that most people considered the Mason-Dixon line the beginning of “Yankee Land”. I did spend 3 years living in Alexandria which is north of Baton Rouge, it was sure different then south Louisiana but now that I know better, it ain’t no “Yankee” area.

Andre, you be close with Bat-on-rouge, but if you be raised Sout a Houma, den you be true Coon Azze. Be from Nort a Morgan City and Sout of Lie-fi-Yet and you be a Yankee. Nort of I-10 and you is like Buddy, a Damn Yankee.
Seriously Dick, if you want true Louisiana, go South young Man. A nice trip is down 90 from Lafayette. Get down around Morgan City, Houma, DuLac, get on the side roads, stop at a bridge (Where everyone is standing fishing) get out and talk to those Folk. You will not find nicer and more polite people on the face of the Earth. If you can get invited to a party, by all means make time and go. Coon Azz is like a Newfoundlander … Love life, laughter, good food and good music. Can’t beat the experience. Blessing of the Shrimp boats is a great party all along the canal. If you make that experience, be sure and borrow a long pole fish net from a local so you can catch the beer thrown from the shrimp boats as they go by. Just yell “Throw me a beer.” and be ready to catch it in the net. Enjoy your trip and don’t be surprised if you start talking like a Cajun in about 6 hours of arriving.

It is true that if you spend any time in the Southern La area, it will take a couple of weeks to begin to speak English again in complete sentences…
One of the great characteristics of Cajun country is that you call the person to whom you are speaking by their name at the last of a comment…

Every time we go hunting in La, we take a week to recover…”uh huh Dick”..

We just got back from the Fort Worth Rally. On the way we spent almost a week in Natchez. We stayed across the river in Vidalia, LA at the River View Campground. Toured Frogmore plantation and the Delta Blues Museum both in Ferriday, LA. Toured a couple of old mansions in Natchez and ate a lot of good food.
Also stayed at Cajun Palms in Breaux Bridge, LA. The shrimp PO Boy’s down there are to die for. Drove all around Pecan Island.
Highly recommend both areas.

The best shrimp po-boy I’ve had was in a corner dinner in the outskirts of new Iberia. Ive been hooked since and have been on a mission to find better ever since.
I’ve been a big James Lee Burke reader and had to visit the town he bases in his dave robucheaux books in (of course that includes Missoula and the bitter root area, but you can’t get a shrimp po-boy up there if your life depended on it).

That place in New Iberia is Bon Creole….. I go there often as I own a storage business three blocks away…. best Poboy’s and gumbo around!! It is a “hole in the wall” type place…..
