  • Loud air leak at max height

Posted by Liam on February 19, 2020 at 10:00 pm

I am an avid follower of all the leak detective posts and amazed how clever some of you are so try this:

Been trying to trace a slow leak for a while. Last time in the shop we soaped everything to no joy.

got curious today and aired-up, then used the level-low to lift everything to max height and powered down.

Loud hiss at the back axle. Bring the coach down to ride height and totally quiet. 3 hours later the back is down, front still up, and air gauges unchanged.

Starting to wonder if this could be a leak at the bottom of an air bag that mostly seals off at ride height? I do remember the garage saying the new bags I installed 8 years ago had the non-metallic cones that don’t have the rust issues that I hear can cause leaks

Trying to get some time over a pit to investigate.

Don’t know about the hiss but does yours have the air cylinders to adjust belts. My cylinder on OTR Compressor leaks and have ordered repair kits from Prevost as mine will settle down in back after a couple days it seems. Kit should be in today as there was a 2 week delay for parts. Heads up if buying new cylinder, almost $1600 bucks and a few months delay from backorder. If you do have this set up check valve that controls cylinders on back bulkhead as mine hissed like a big dog when it went to bypassing. This is on my 91XL. Yours might be different.

    Nope, old school mechanical tensioner.

Darn, drove by the one shop with a pit and they are tearing it down.

Maybe you can salvage the pit.

Good idea. I should move it to my house!

Liam, what size crane would you need to lift that pit out to take to your house? Oh, and what type of spreader bar would you need to fit the lifting bridle?

There is an old Irish story of a guy in an ass-cart who came across a big hole where someone dig out a tree and thought it was such a perfect hole he wanted to buy it and take it home on his cart.
