  • Lost reading on two gauges

Posted by Archived on April 1, 2013 at 9:18 pm

I am trying to understand why I would loose two gauges at apparently the same time. One minuet I had half scale readings on water temp. and oil temp and then nothing on either gauge . I can see no relays or breakers that would apply.

    Any ideas.

Might be a supply or ground problem. Do the two gauges share 12/24V or ground? Loose wire?

They don’t share a common junction point but since they both failed at the same time there must be a common connection. I note when you turn the key over to the right they both light up and the needles both bounce but then fail to read anything.

Did you check the senders in the engine bay? For the S60 the coolant temp sender is located on the upper corner, right side, rear of the head. The oil pressure and temp senders are at the rear of the engine block above the starter. The oil temp sender is the smaller one. There are two sets of senders, one for the DDEC and the other for the dash gauges. You should be able to measure resistance across the sender terminals (e.g. 100 Ohm). Also check the ground connection for both senders. It might be shared and loose. That could explain what you are seeing.

Many thanks for the comments. Interesting that I tapped on the water temp gauge on the dash and it seemed to come to life and provide a normal reading. Shortly after that the oil temp appeared to work again. Water reading and the oil were about half scale at a little under 195 degrees each which I assume would be about normal for a 60 degree day and 65 mph. I suspect it is not solved but at least working for now.

This afternoon I am resurrecting the dual CB antennas on the Liberty. Hoping the SWR will be good.
