  • Lost of boost found 8v92ta

Posted by Guy on May 10, 2018 at 12:10 am

Notice my boost went down to 10 lbs, and a lot of black smoke when accelerating. change my boost/map sensor for a 2 bar more black smoke !!! and same boost, so i decide to check for exhaust leak, nothing serious a first inspection. so i decide to remove the left manifold and was the problem. not a single port was sealing….. so 1 hrs later and 20 gallons of antifreeze dump (don’t forget all the stud are in the coolant) the manifold is remove and on route for the machine shop to straighten job. Don’t forget the best mechanic is you……

    frenchies,

Might want the machine shop to check for cracks, magnafluxing is the old procedure. Don’t know what new technology may be out there.

I too experience a boost loss. Mine turned out to be a simple change of the fuel filter. That was on a trip to/from OKC. I stopped at Prevost Nashville and they focused on the turbo tubes as being the source of the problem. After a couple of hours of hammer applications and reassembly a test run was made up I-24. It seemed to be fixed. The next morning as I entered I-24 south toward Nashville going up the on ramp the engine would not develop boost. I limped home slowly and with a substantially lightened wallet after paying Prevost for the non-repair.

I got home, changed the primary and secondary fuel filters and the problem went away. So I agree, the best mechanic is you, if you have some degree of knowledge on how a diesel or gasoline engine works.

Looks like spare primary and secondary fuel filters should be in the list of items to keep in the tool box as a backup.

Right on Ron. They don’t take up much room and can easily be changed out “in the field.” I replace them in the storage building around 6,000 miles. The cost for replacement filters installed by the operator is minimal compared to the cost of the Provost Goodlettsville “repair.”

Since the 8V92 uses straight 40 weight Delo 400 I also keep minimum of seven gallons on board before departing on a trip. In addition I carry one quart of power steering fluid. Of course a fairly full set of tools are also carried on board.

From posts I have read from those who seem to be in the know is that you should be carrying Delo 100 40W instead of the Delo 400. I have been order it as necessary from O’Reilly Auto Parts.
