  • Loss of digital engine oil pressure reading

Posted by Eric on June 23, 2019 at 9:38 pm

While traveling on the highway west of Denver, engine shut down due to reported loss of engine oil pressure. Both engine oil pressure analog gauges show normal operating pressure Spoke with Jon. He was kind to share phone number of Jim and Chris, who live in the Denver area. These two smart, kind gentlemen quickly responded to my location. We found the sensor and disconnected it. Now I’m able to drive the coach with a CEL, still have my analog pressure gauge to finish my hour long drive to destination. Tomorrow, I’ll order a new pressure switch. Crossing my fingers that will fix it. Huge thank you for all the help.

    Thanks Jon, Truk

We had just gotten home after our day of volunteering at our local transportation museum, when Eric called. With his location description, I knew they were only 19 miles west of us. I told Chris we had a mission, and we loaded up the dogs in Rover, and off we went.

Let’s see if I understand this. There is a traditional oil pressure sensor somewhere on the DD that sends a signal to the oil pressure gauge on the dash.

Then there is a second oil pressure sensor on the DD, a digital on, that sends a digital signal to the DDEC which monitors oil pressure. When the DDEC sees “low oil pressure” coming from the digital sensor, it will shut the engine down or go into limp mode or whatever the DD engineers programmed it to do.

    Correct?

Mine has 2 also; the opposite happened to me; the digital one to the ECM worked and the engine stayed running while the analogue one died making my oil pressure gauge read 0 and the alarm light and buzzer annoyed us for hours!

My dash gage went to the max, but the only alarm was the one ringing loudly in my heard until I was sure the oil pressure was really normal.sealed

All is fixed and working perfectly. Went to a shop and got the replacement part, $88. Using a 1 1/4 inch socket, installed the new oil pressure sensor and tested it out. Back to normal, no issues whatsoever.

My sincerest thanks for everyone’s help. We are very grateful.

    Safe remaining travels.

Eric: Can you give us an idea where the analog sensor is. Maybe a picture. Did you have go in from underneath the coach? or is it accessible through the engine bay or the rear doors? The needle on our analog gauge on our coach has a tendency to “jump around” from time to time. Jeff Rowe @ ETLC noticed it during the initial zero out before I drove the coach and concluded it was a problem with the gauge or the sending unit … don’t worry about it. I recall him telling me the digital sending unit would shut the engine down if there really was a problem with the oil pressure. Thanks!

    Dick,

Do an internet search. Detroit has a diagram of a Series 60 engine with the location of all sensors shown and marked as to the type.
