  • Looking for radiator shutters

Posted by Tom on December 14, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Our H3-40 is missing the radiator shutters. I know that it had them because the air line is there along with all the controls but they are turned off. I do not live in a cold enough area to really ned them, but what I do want is the perimeter housing for the shutters to seal against the rubber seal on the out door. Reason is in the heat of the summer without the shutters my radiator can be pulling hot air from the engine compartment instead of air from the outside causing the cooling system to be less effective.

I have not called Prevost yet to get the cost but hoping I could find a used set at a much lower cost. I do have the 39″ radiator as opposed to the 36″

Thanks for any information you can help with.

    Tom,

I would start by going to salvage yards for bus parts. Radiator shutters actually are very beneficial in that they save fuel. If when they close virtually no air passes through the radiator and it reduces the load imposed by the fan. Lore has it that the radiator fan can take as much as 30 HP but I have no verification of that.

If you want to see how something that blocks air flow can reduce the load on a fan, run a vacuum cleaner with nothing impeding the air flow into the hose. Then stick your hand over the end of the hose and you will immediately notice the speed of the vacuum motor increases since the load has been reduced.
