  • Looking for info on 1997 Liberty coach #516

Posted by John on July 18, 2015 at 12:59 pm

Let me start off by saying thank you to Jon and Tom and Jeff
and all the members of the Prevost Community for all of their information and
support. I have learned so much from
this forum and have so much more to learn.
The support of the members is unmatched by any organization. I have already been rescued by a PC member,
(thanks again Hish), and I don’t even have my own Prevost yet.

We are considering a 1997 40 ft at Parliament, coach # 516. Anyone with any info and advice on this coach
    (#516) would be appreciated.

The link above is from the Oct 2014 listing. The information that I have is the coach was
purchased in Oct 2014 and just traded back in on another coach. As crazy as that sounds, I can understand
because I am familiar with the other coach involved and the previous owner and
would have jumped at the chance to get it too.

The details I have are as follows:

As part of the Oct 2014 sale – new paint job, new batteries,
    new front tires

New flooring just installed by Parliament

Thanks to my education from PC, I have requested the service
history from Prevost. In addition to verifying the dates of the batteries, tires,
air bags, norgen valves, fluid change intervals, what would be biggest concern
on a coach of this vintage? My biggest
concern is that I now know how much I do not know.

What items should have been serviced/replaced and when to a
1997 coach with 120,000 miles. What is
    /could be due next?

I have signed up for the Oct seminar and hope I make the top
twenty cut. With the help of the PC
members, we might be able to attend in our first Prevost instead of a 2008 . I have heard that Jon and Tom love to spend
other peoples money. If we do get our
Prevost this year, can we get a waiver on next years dues? Thanks again in advance.

Having had a 97 Liberty of the same vintage but 45 feet long I am not able to point at any devices or systems that would be a concern.

That is not to say I wouldn’t want to know the dates on the age related components from tires to batteries to air bags to brake chambers to Norgren valves. I am sure the folks at Parliament would agree that time and not mileage on components such as those determines if you are OK or they need attention.

At that age of coach there are time in service factors that affect the OTR such as the compressor, the fan motors, the seal behind the clutch, etc. But it needs to be understood that if they are OK when you inspect the coach, they could be OK for years, or they could have a failure as soon as you pull out of the driveway. Ditto with the 3 cruise airs, the refrigerator or the inverters as examples. It is always a tradeoff when paying less for an older coach, which is the offset for what will probably be a repair frequency not found in a 5 year old coach for example. But then again those are six and seven figure coaches so paying for repairs as needed, or doing a blanket replacement of components to bring everything to new condition is still a lot cheaper.

Run the codes for the engine and transmission, give the pneumatic system a very close scrutiny, and do a complete operational check of all systems and you should be good to go. I am unaware of any weaknesses of that vintage coach. You will find it is the most economical coach to own because the rivet construction is bullet proof, the engine is robust, simple and delivers great mileage, and it is very easy to work on.

    Darrell,

Sorry, that just might be my newbie showing, that is the way that Parliment has it listed.

How do you tell the real coach #? Is it in the VIN#?

    Thanks for the reply.

    Jon,

Thanks for the reply and the info. I love this site and everyone is so generous and helpful.

If we do go through with the deal, what kind of warranty should we expect or ask for as part of the deal? Would that cover any of the things we should be most concerned with?

Is there a Detroit shop near Parliment to run the codes or can Parliment do it? Can I get a print out of them to post for the members to review?

Thanks again for the reply and all you do for all the members.

I think we know that bus. Jon, was it Ben’s?

Also, we need to get at least 3 years dues up front, this Wade guy is going to be trouble.:)

It could be, but I cannot be sure. John, prior to proceeding with the exchange of money I would make sure you gather as much information as possible, give the coach the best inspection by you to insure everything is correct and (just a gut feel) try to find records to indicate coolant maintenance according to the Prevost and Detroit schedule.

    Email me.

    Jon,

Thanks for all the info and the insight.

Not being familiar with the area where Parliment is located, where should I try to take the coach to have it inspected? Should it go one place for the engine and transmission and another for the underside and another for all the converter items? Are there tests that can be done to the fluids to give insight into the internal state of the systems?

Actually, if I were buying a coach in that area the people I would ask to do the inspection would be Parliament. I think that might be a conflict of interest so the closest shop that can probably do a decent inspection would be Tradewinds in Sanford for the conversion portion. For the engine and transmission I would go to a Detroit dealer. I think there must be one close by.

    Andre,

Thanks for the info. I have gotten a bunch of great advice and help from the PC community today. If we proceed with the deal, I will definitely want an inspection by a detroit shop as a condition before the sale.

    Coach search update

I sent a request for service info and to see if Parliament could
contact the previous owners, (since they have been the dealer for two sales of
this coach) to see if they would be willing to talk with us.

The next response I received from Parliament was that the
    coach had been sold.

Oh well, back to the search.

I would like to thank all the members that took the time to post
a response to my thread. Especially,
Jon, Tom, Peter, Hish and Don, who went out of their way to share their
knowledge and experience with me personally.
I have some great new contact numbers in my phone with big stars next to
them. I hope to be able to express my
thanks in person at the next seminar, whether in a new to us Prevost or same
    old .
