  • Looking For Awning Window Weatherstrip/Gasket

Posted by Tim on May 2, 2018 at 5:09 pm

I’m trying to find the weatherstrip/gasket that the awning window seals against when the window is closed on an XLII. I found the part number(s) in the Prevost Parts catalog. I called Prevost Parts and they said that the part numbers were obsoleted by the vendor and they didn’t have a replacement part number.

There were a lot of Prevost coaches built with that kind of window. I would expect that someone else has already come across the need to replace the awning window weatherstrip/gasket before me. The profile for both the inner and outer gaskets appear to be the same. There is a difference in the length of gasket needed to do the inner verses the outer gasket track and I think that accounts for the different Prevost part numbers.

Any ideas on where to get the weatherstrip/gasket material or a suitable aftermarket replacement?

    Thanks

Below I have some pictures and a crude drawing of the weather strip that I am looking for. The dimensions on the drawing are close approximations.

Im looking for some insight as to what is out there that might work. Has anybody had some work done that includes replacing these weather strips?

    Thanks.

Tim: I am envious of your obvious expertise with SketchUp. I’ve tried to learn it on two or three occasions and haven’t had much luck.

You’d like with details like that, a company like Steele Rubber Products would be able to re-produce it. As time goes on, I think there should be big demand for those gaskets.

Do the XLs use the same dimension gaskets?

As discussed in a different thread, we XL owners are grappling with the same situation with respect to the vertical rubber strip between the glass sections of the driver’s window and the door window. Also, on the Facebook group for XL ownters, there’s been discussion of the issue as well with someone mentioning that he knows a manufacturer that would be willing to do a short run if the engineering can be worked out.

It took me quite a while, as a new SketchUp user, to the the drawing to this point. I believe that the actual measurements of the weather strip still need a little refining. If we could get a copy of the original weather strip drawings from Prevostsurprised…that would help.

I looked at the XL awning window weather strip and, to me, it looks completely different.

Do you know of a manufacturer that would be willing to re-produce weather strip in, what would be to them, small runs?

You may want to try Steele Rubber Products in Maiden, NC.

#704-483-9343. They manufacture and have a variety of already made RV seals and gaskets.

Steele is big not only in RV gaskets … but rubber gaskets and products for classic, antique, and collector cars.

Don’t we have Prevost owners in the Maiden, NC area? I’d like to think if someone pulled up with a Prevost and explained the problem in getting replace gaskets, Steele would see the potential for the market.

There is also a firm in Charlotte, NC that may be able to help find the gasket needed. The Firm is:

    Carolina Houdaille

    1914 West Morehead Street

    Charlotte, NC 28208

    (336)681-0774 or (703) 585- 8199

Ask for Mike Zeh. He is a pit bull when working to find a source. They also have lots of weather stripping in the store for classic/antique/current vehicles. I was able to get the weather stripping needed for replacement on a bedroom window. The first “find” was incorrect. He went back to work and came up with the correct product. Delivered it from Charlotte in person and did the install.

I went to Steele first and they referred me to Carolina Houdaille. I did get a nice automotive calendar from Steel so it was not a total waste of fuel! I actually took the weather striping needed and they were unable to source it.

As for just what a Houdaille is, well ask Buddy. In case Buddy does not know, a Houdaille is the first generation of hydraulic shock absorber for cars.

Some while ago, I talked with a gentleman at Steele Rubber. He said they would indeed be interested in the market for older Prevost model stuff as they’ve had a number of inquiries. But, he said they need an actual physical sample of the seal/gasket in order to engineer it. Unfortunately, we don’t want to give up our window seal or a portion of it as a sacrifice. If we were near Maiden, we’d gladly camp in Steele’s parking lot while their engineers work on it provided they could give it back intact.

I checked with every weather strip supplier that I can think of. No luck finding anything close enough to work.

I’m changing my search direction for the weather strip from finding surplus to maybe having some custom made if it’s not cost prohibitive. Problem is, most places want an actual sample to use for the engineering dimensions and material.

Is there anyplace where I could get a length of the awning window weather strip from a junked or surplus 2001-2006 XL2? There’s got to be some out there, I just don’t know where to look yet.

I am having issues as well in locating the vertical weather stripping for the drivers side and passenger door sliding windows. Has anyone had any luck in locating these weather strips?

    thanks
