Meanwhile back at the ranch.
Had turbo rebuilt by Midwest Turbo Connection Hudson, WI. Total cost $332. Can’t say enough good things about these folks. After they took it apart and evaluated everything, they called and discussed next move. They applied the $65 evaluation cost to the rebuild cost. Came back like new. Long way from the $$$$ quoted for new.
So new turbo on and smoking better but still there. Soooo, decided to proceed according to the book of Jon. Started genny up and turned everything on that had an electrical switch. Got to a load of about 50 amps on each leg. More than had ever been loaded before, I’m sure. Smoke came rolling out the back like who goosed the moose and I just left it like that for a couple of hours. Had to keep changing the water I was boiling on the stove and in the microwave, of course. Smoke became less as time went on and I got the feeling wet stacking was going out the back!
After the 2 hours, unloaded the legs, let it continue to run, and began the tapping on the tailpipe routine. Holy cow! Crap and corruption came out like crazy – especially from the corrugated pipe that Marathon put from about the drive axle on back. Repeated tapping from front to back several times. No catalytic converter in my system.
Now have happy smokeless genny – and wife. Plan to repeat the load routine regularly. Thanks to all who chimed in. Mike

Bernie,
I’ve never changed the fuel pump… think it might help? I’ll try just about anything. The smoking genny sucks.

Most of these bigger gen sets come with thermostats in the 172* range. This has always been less than optimum in my mind. Thermostats are available in 186f / 92c range . I’ve changed mine to the warmer one on a few coaches, seems to help the lighter load smoking issue some..

Our water temp hovers around 140. I wondered if that was too low… seems to me that it should be around 190 but I’m. It sure about these smaller engines.
I pointed it out at Marathon once and the tech didn’t seem too concerned.
I’ve also changed the turbo… not too long ago.

You know I have had that thought about the temp on the genny as well. Always runs 140 to 170 which seems downright cold for a diesel motor. Think I will follow your advice and boost up that thermostat. Thanks. Mike
