  • Lincoln MKX as a tow car

Posted by Jerry on January 28, 2020 at 8:39 am

I am interested in a Lincoln MKX as a tow car. Is there anything unusual one needs to do to prep this vehicle for towing four wheels down? Anything to watch out for or restrictions while towing? Are some years or trim options better than others? Any to be avoided? Any experience you can share would be appreciated. If anyone has one you want to sell already set up for towing, let me know the details via email, glwork at MAC dot com. Thanks.

    Jerry:

FMCA list a vehicle tow chart yearly. Go to their web site.

Thanks, Chuck. I am an FMCA National Director and serve on the National Review Council so am quite familiar with the FMCA magazine towing guide. I am looking for info from those who have direct experience with these as tow cars to help inform my decision, hence the post here.

    Hello Jerry and Sharon!

Yes, we tow a 2017 Lincoln MKX (Ms. Ruby). I have to say it’s a wonderful tow vehicle. It weighs 4,200 lbs. and is very comfortable.

Ours is fully loaded with the driver protection features that ‘Jon’ loves…. lane control, adjustable distance cruise-control, paddle-shifting, auto braking and even auto parking (haven’t used that yet), front and rear camera’s, etc.

I had the Air Force One supplemental braking system installed along with the Roadmaster base plate, etc.

In the dash menu, there is a selection for ‘Neutral Towing’, following the steps are easy and straight forward. In the manual, it is recommended a max towing speed of 65 mph and to start the engine and let run for 5 min. at the beginning of each day and every 6 hours afterwards. That is about the max time for us traveling so it works perfectly.

We have had this car for almost 3 yrs. in May and it has only been back to the dealer for normal service (currently 13,000 driving miles, probably 8,000 towing miles).

    Safe travels,

    Mark

PS. It is my understanding that the new Lincoln Nautilus is towable but has a completely different set-up procedure. Something about unlocking the transmission at the console.

Tow the Wife’s front wheel drive 2018 MKX Reserve and it’s an easy set up. No problems with 2 years of towing.
