  • Liberty Power Problem, Part 2

Posted by Rob&Sue on July 30, 2018 at 8:31 am

As a follow up to my thread July 20 … I still have a problem.

On July 21st I had reported power seemed to be running fine in the coach, after I removed the Surge Bar. I then ordered and installed the Progressive Industries PT50X. Everything working fine, until …

On the evening of the 28th – heard loud click (like when shore power is first connected). Invertor 2 remote – indicated no “AC Input”. Seconds later – it came on … normal. No indication on EMS of any fault (E=0).

July 29th – 5am. We heard loud static, like popcorn – maybe ~8-10 seconds from the area behind the Liberty 110 panel, beside the fridge, and a few clicks. Line 2 reading as before – ~118, ~ 1.0 … no lights on any of the items powered on line 2, inverter remote 2 – no “AC Input”. The EMS did not indicate any errors – did indicate L1 = ~118, 0 – and Line 2 = ~118, 10a. Shut off all toggles on 110 panel we didn’t need. I shut off power @post.

9am – fired up Generator and all ran as perfectly. Loaded up a little with AC, from Line 1 and 2, coffee machine etc.

    10am – Started power @post – let everything settle in, batteries recharge, water heat, etc. All seems normal – except … 11am – 110 Volt panel reading Line 1 = ~118, ~25a Line 2 = ~120, ~10a. EMS @post reading Line 1 = ~118, ~10a Line 2 = ~120, ~25a. Everything ran normal all day … except, opposite Line 1/line 2 readings panel, vs. post?

11pm – a few clicks near the 110 panel – Line 2 gone again as before.

So – it’s not power at the post.

It’s not the surge bar (I now have 2 good ones).

Everything seems to work fine when on Gen.

Turning power on/off @ post will likely reset – but – for how long?

Where do I go from here?

Sounds like a loose connection or maybe a failing transfer switch.

Sounds like the ATS switch (Automatic transfer switch) is falling. Be careful and remove cover on the ATS switch and if it is a Maverick or any other type they do the same thing, It takes power from the power post or Gen and directs it to the coach, from power post it is quick, from gen there is a delay built in so gen can run for a few before power kicks in just in case AC’s happen to be on or something else with a large amp draw. If a have a volt meter and your careful look at ATS switch when it’s not working rite and you will see 2 large relays and 3 sets of cables coming to it and they will have 4 wires in them 1st Black 120v -2nd Red 120v- 3rd white Neutral 4th Green or copper ground. Start checking at relays from neutral (white) to Black should have 110v plus and the check neutral (white) to red and you should have 110 plus volts, that should be on 1 of the relays top and bottom. Now most likely 1 of the sets of cables will be dead one side (legs) of the wires. Then un plug coach and find out and mark each set of cables (Shore-House-Gen) easy way is to take your 50 amp plug with your volt meter set on OHMS and on plug the flat terminal opposite round ground and check the sets from white to that flat terminal till you see connection and just to be sure check black to the other flat terminals. Mark cable shore. once you’ve determined which cable is dead you will know if it is your plug or ATS switch or down stream from that. If you have any questions call (805) 712-9449

Thanks again to ALL for the great information and suggestions .. and Art, for the conversation and pictures! Very much appreciated.

It did indeed turn out to be the contactor relay/switch, connected to the Cord Reel power cable. 10-15 mins to diagnose — 20 mins to swap (by an electrician, not me) All good.
As mentioned, but certainly obvious .. we are new to the Prevost world – this is our first bus. A little intimidating for sure — but, with folks like you out there, with experience and a willingness to talk us newbies “off the ledge” … I will continue to learn and solve problems as they come up.
    Sincere thanks.
