Liberty Ceiling panels
Has anyone removed the ceiling panels in an early 90’s Liberty ? I have wondered how you would access the ceiling speakers if they needed replaced or upgraded but so far they sound good. Now my bride thinks she wants to change the color of one of the ceiling panels on each side. We have a miror down the center and on each side there are 3 tiers of material covered panels. Hopefully they are not glued. Maybe the material is wrapped around after they are screwed ?
Just thought someone might have tackled this, if not I guess it will be a trip to Sanford.

I had to change refrigerators in our 97 Liberty and had to cut the header panel over the opening because the new refrigerator was a little higher. I wanted to remove the header and make the cut on the bench, but to remove it I had to drop a portion of the ceiling.
I don’t know if your ceiling is like mine was, but after speaking to Liberty and understanding how they secure the ceiling it turned out there was no way we would ever consider ceiling removal. Liberty ceilings are not meant to be removed. I am not being critical in this instance because I have seen some coaches whose ceiling panels are held in place with blind panel fasteners such as “christmas trees” or velcro and have fallen.

Kind of makes me wonder how they were assembled and covered. I will call Bill Doughrty at Liberty and see what he says.
I guess you ended up cutting the area in place ?

Yes, the header was cut in place, not the easiest thing to do. When I spoke to Liberty I talked to the guy that actually installed the ceilings. When he got done explaining how they are constructed he had me convinced.

I am glad you warned me before we tried without being prepared.
Talked with Bill in Chicago and he was very familiar with the older coaches, as you said the ceiling is not made to be removed easily, however it is not a big deal if you do not care about the covering. He said the suade is glued and sometimes tears or stretches when trying to remove it. He suggested using a blow dryer to loosen the glue.
Once the material is removed there are screws holding the panels up. And you have to start at the bottom panel, they are overlapped. We need to get to the second panel to change the color and the bottom panel is where the speakers are so we can leave the top panel alone. We may just plan on replacing the material on both panels just to make the job easier.
He also suggested modifying the speaker mounts so they can be replaced by using speaker grills instead of the hidden speakers behind the material.
Do the newer Liberties have hidden speakers or they have grills ?

That really looks good Tom, they don’t stand out like regular grills. Looks like they are in the wall also. I especially like the crown molding.
