What Mikee said is true. My Relion were listed as acceptable for series and parallel connections, but in fact they were not and the 12V side did not charge properly and shut down. The solution (unacceptable) was to separate them monthly and recharge individually.
Relion replaced them with 4 24V at no expense to me, including installation and 3 Victron 24 to 12 converters (70 amp each) to handle the 12V circuits.

Mikee, All batteries grade A are coming out with their own BMS. As long as they are the same brand, size and voltage, they can be wired in series. Not a problem.
-
Not correct if wired in series. Sure it can be done, there are no battery cops, but it does not provide protection as one battery cannot see the other one.
Check with the manufacturer.

Mikee batteries are changing fast, they are getting better and better. The old days of all these restrictions are going away. Lithium is the future my brothers!
-
Art, if you have the LiTime App you can setup the batteries 3 ways. Parallel, Series or Parallel Series. How is the install coming are your inverters connected up?
-
I have had Li batteries for 5 years or so, and Relion said the same about series/parallel, until it did not work. I guess technology has changed, but having been burned once (thank you Relion for doing the right thing) I would want some guarantee in writing.

I Just got new 4/0 cables for batteries I got 3 black and 3 red 12 inches long each, One of the sail boat video’s I watched they install 4 of the Li Times 280 amp hour batteries and he said all the cables joining the batteries should be all the same size and all mine looked old and all ram dome sizes and 2 smaller diameter. And we have been working around house, Bought property in 85, Built house 86 and we were out in the country then when the Wineries started coming in the 90’s the area around us started getting bigger, There is a 50 food beep seasonal creek behind us and 18 years a rich young built a nice house and a Theme Park Pool it looks like Disneyland, It has had 3 owners and now owned by group buying up houses and turning them in to Air B&B’s, The pool is at least 6 or 700 feet away and creek buffer full of large Oak trees We just put up fence panels trying to block sound and visual, People and pumps can get loud, Templeton has a lot of this going on, Not fair to existing neighbors

If you can install a Bus Bar for your + and – that would be the best. You might not have the time. My Bus has a bus bar, all my red cables are the same length, my black also.

Art & Mike:
I need input from your experiences.
Over seeing installation/changeout of AMG house batteries to Lithium on a yacht. Obstacle I am running into is, need to change/upgrade engine alternator for Lithiums but being told the upgraded alternator for the lithiums will not work for the AGM start battery’s. It’s one or the other, is this accurate and if so is there a work around for one alternator to charge two different batteries (lithium/AGM)?Chuck

That is the task performed by a battery-to-battery charger IF the starting LA batteries and the Li battery bank are the same voltage. Leave the alternator and lead acid starting battery alone. Connect the starter battery to the input side of a B-to-B and connect the output side to the Li batteries. The B-to-B charger will modify the amps and volts to the charge profile the Li batteries need and will isolate the LA and Li batteries from one another. The B-to-B only turns on when the voltage on the input side rises to reflect the presence of a charge current. You can use multiple B-to-B chargers installed in parallel. Match the amp rating of the B-to-B charger(s) to be no more than 60% of the amp rating of the alternator.
If the starting and Li battery bank operate at different voltages HIRE A PRO TO DO THIS FOR YOU. Do not tie into a battery balance function on your own if your starting battery bank is more than one 12vdc battery connected in parallel to power a 24vdc starter motor.

Are you sure the alternator is the problem, and not the charging voltage or protocol that is handled by the voltage regulator.
My coach uses a single 50DN and the Prevost regulator setting is 27.7V which is perfect for my Li.
If the coach has a multiple alternator set up it my be the regulators are internal as smaller alternators tend to have in which case you may hae to use a different alternator.
-
Jon:
Your 50DN is adjusted for the Li house batteries, what charges your chassis batteries?
Chuck
-
Chuck, you can charge Lithium at the Lower voltage, it’s just not optimal. Jon’s alternator putting out the 27.7 is under the recommended charge Voltage but it works for going down the road. My bus is similar, I have a 24 VDC alternator running at a similar voltage as Jon’s and i charge my house batteries using a Victron DC to DC charger to step the voltage down to 12 VDC. I set this unit to 20 amps max current draw to charge my house batteries running down the road. This along with my Solar works well for me.

My chassis and house batteries are simultaneously charged from the 50DN.
