Level Low / ride height position issue
Posted by Richard on March 14, 2016 at 11:12 pmI have a vintage 1983 coach, no matter what position my level low toggle switch is in, I have to add manual air to lift the front up to normal height to drive. Could this be the ride height valve and if so, how do I determine if that is it please?

Ok, so if you manually raise the front of the coach all the way up, does the front end come down to ride height? It also sounds as if the rear of the coach comes up to ride height with out any issue.

If I raise the front all the way up, no it does not come down to the correct height, nothing happens. Yes, the rear works fine.

Can we start again? Diagnosing the causes of level low system issues is reasonably straight forward but to help you we need a complete understanding of what is going on.
You say the front won’t come down. There are two unrelated ways to lower the front so we have to understand if you have tried both, and if so what is happening, or what is not happening.

When I get ready to move my coach and put the switch in road mode, the rear suspension comes up to normal height, but the front does nothing. I have to manually push the front button on my panel to add air to bring the front up so I can travel. Now, once I bring the front up, it stays there, I just have to add air from time to time on long trips to keep it at the right height (leakage). If I switch to level low, it still does nothing on the front air bags, everything I do up or down has to be done manually through pushing or pulling the front button.
My previous post was answering a question of if I raise the front all the way up, does it come back down to level and the anwer is No.

Because you may have different valves than the Norgrens, and possibly a different system logic than what we are familiar with, take this with a grain of salt because I am answering in the context of the common level low systems almost all the coaches have.
When you select the road position air to the air bags passes through the ride height valves. The air supply to all three ride height valves passes through what we refer to as 5 port Norgren valves on most coaches. The valve is energized by a solenoid valve located on a manifold in the steer compartment. When the valve is energized air from that solenoid valve shifts the spool in the 5 port Norgrens to open the air path through the ride heigh valves.
I mention this because the first step in analysis is to verify each of the valves passing air to the ride height valves is in fact opening the path. If you get pressurized air at the input to each ride height valve with the key on and the coach set to the road position the ride height valve may be disconnected or not functioning.
If there is the pressurized air at that point verify the valve supplying air to the ride height valves is opening. The fact the rear functions as intended suggests the problem is related to the ride height valve or the valve that is either a 5 port Norgren or a substitute type with the same function.
Do not get under the coach unless it is supported. Please.

I believe I have the air diagram for your coach (or very close) rev 3_82 (Prevost side) Let me know if you need it and I’ll send it to you. It shows Level Low Control Valves Front, RR-L.H, and RR-R.H. which appear on the schematic on the passenger side in front of the air bags. It also shows Level Low Sol Valve Front and Rear (two) which appear very near each of the three height control valves (one on the front and one on each side on the rear).

have you checked the road height adjuster valve? Item 47 on the diagram. It should be somewhere near and above the front axle. If the adjustment arm is not attached to the coach with a screw like rod the valve will never adjust the air in to raise the coach or exhaust air to let it down. This should take place when the switch in the cab is in the drive position. If it is not working then you would have to do the adjustments manually.
Just something to quickly look at while the coach is supported so it will not fall you if an air bag blows.
