  • Level Low Help

    I am currently not being able to manually (Prevost or HWH systems) or automatically (HWH system) level my coach and have read through as much information as I could but could still use a lot of help. The coach is leaning on the front right side and does not seem to react to the HWH control panel or the Prevost Level Low when the HWH system is off so I suspect that there is a problem with the Level Low system although there could be a problem with the HWH system as well.

    I’ll start with a leak that is coming through the 3rd solenoid down in the Level Low Manifold.

    1. With the HWH system on (ignition OFF) it leaks so fast that the compressor does not shut off.
    2. With the HWH system off and the ignition ON the leak slows significantly but does not stop.
    3. With the HWH system off and the ignition OFF the system leaks but not as much as with the HWH system on and ignition OFF.
    4. The above was after I swapped solenoids and nothing appeared to have changed. The solenoid does click when the ignition is put in the ON position and is getting 24 volts when the ignition is ON and nothing when the ignition is OFF.
    5. With the engine running, the HWH system turns off automatically and the control is supposed to go to the Prevost Level Low system, which it appears to do, but I cannot get the Prevost Level Low control to lower or raise any part of the coach.

    Component Status:

    1. I believe that the 5-Way Norgrens in the rear were changed out in 2012 and that the ride height valves were changed as well. The front ride height valve was changed out out late last year as well as a 3-Way that is locate on the left side of the front axle.
    2. In the steering compartment, it looks like I have the original (2) 3-Way Norgrens stacked as opposed to the 5-way Jon mentions in his “Prevost Leveling Diagnosis” document – see picture.

    Any help as to where I should look next would be much appreciated. I just need to be able to get to Jeff’s in late April.

    The 3rd one down is road height. You said you swapped valves, any chance you lost the little tiny O Ring, it happens.

    Tom, I don’t think I lost the O ring but I can look and/or swap another coil but the system did not seem to act any different with the swapped coil. The coil that I swapped was the second one which, I understand, is for the front ride height control and it seemed to energize ok when I operated the Prevost Level Low control dial in the front position but no change in the coach’s position.

    Could the exhausting from the Level Low pilot manifold be becasue the 3-way(s) may be plugged or unable to react to the pilot air and the air has no place else to go but out the Level Low manifold?

    Is it normal to have air exhaust out the Level Low manifold? If so, under what conditions?

    At the core of the problem is a leak so substantial the compressor will not shut off. Before any further diagnosis is possible that leak has to be fixed and Tom is likely to have nailed what might be the cause.

    The only time air will be heard at the solenoid valve manifold is when power is removed from one of the solenoid valves and the pressure on that pneumatic circuit is exhausted through the top of the solenoid valve stem at the red cap.

    Looks like that hose between the valves is cocked a bit could that leaking too?

    I had a similar issue a couple of weeks ago. The third valve continued to leak air with ignition off.

    If AUX air continues to leak through the top of the solenoid valve with ignition off, that valve no longer seals the AUX air plenum in the solenoid stack. No other Norgren valves are involved. It takes only a minute amount of dirt to keep it open and the plunger stuck. The easiest way is to replace the valve (watch for the tiny O ring on the bottom.) If you don’t have a spare valve, you can open it and try to clean it and make sure the plunger moves.

    If there is moisture in the system, sometimes it helps to ensure you have full AUX pressure (125psi) before you operate the Level Low system. Run the engine at high idle, fan the brakes until the engine compressor kicks in and wait until the dryer sneezes.

    Thank you all for the information.

    Is the tiny O ring that gets mentioned in the valve body itself? I only removed the retaining ring (E clip), pulled the coil off, then disconnected the coil from the three prong female electrical connector and then swapped the coil.

    With the retaining ring off and ignition ON I placed and removed the coil on the tube with the red threaded end cap several times and can hear the valve engage and release as I placed and removed the energized coil.

    I realize that the center coil is energized whenever the ignition is ON and the selector is in the drive position but I was surprised by how hot it gets, is this normal?

    Fred, there does not appear to be any leaking from the hoses or their connections.

    I took the valve apart and cleaned everything including the tiny O ring and it all works well now including the HWH system.

    Thanks for the heads up in looking for the tiny O ring as I would have likely not noticed it.

    Thanks Gerald for the idea about cleaning the valve. I’ll probably order 1 as a spare. Does anyone have a part number handy? Otherwise, I am sure I can find it.

    The ride height coil/valve is usually the first one to go because it’s on with the ignition and gets really hot. Hot is normal Andy…
