  • Leaky R14 valve

    I did a 60 mile trip yesterday. Got back home at 6pm. This morning at 8am both primary and secondary brake pressures where down to 40psi, This bus normally takes a month to go from 120 to 100psi.

    I got my soapy water and went looking for my R14h relay valve back between the drive and tag axles. Sure nuff!(see pic). I was planning to change it soon anyway. They’re cheap,

    My question is: mine seems to be indexed differently than what I’m seeing online. When I purchase the new R14h valve, can I unbolt the top half from the bottom half, turn it 90 degrees, then bolt it back together?

    That’s a Prevost or Ben dix question. On page 45 of the catalog linked below there are several configurations shown and listed, and a little voice inside my head says you might be able, but the top is not symetrical and I doubt if Prevost takes each one apart rather than making the support bracket in the correct orientation.

    Most of the time when R14 is changed you have to turn the cap or top part to have fittings be turned the right way , just make sure no dirt gets in or around the washer

    I rebuilt my leaky R14(H) brake relay valve and 1 of my three R12(H) brake relay valves. The other two were replaced by a previous owner.

    I purchased the 2 rebuild kits on ebay, delivered to the door in 3 days for less than $25ea. The Bendix part# is 102802 and is for both valves.

    I cleaned the exterior of each in my abrasive cabinet w/aluminum oxide and the inside w/mineral spirits. It took about 2 hrs total per valve.

    1st pic is of the R14 ready to come off, and the 2nd is of it rebuilt and its old parts next to it.

    I thought it easier to rebuild the valves than replace them because I didn’t have to remove the fittings from the old and reinstall them, perfectly indexed, in the new.

    That’s not a bad idea for a spare to carry with you. Ive had a seal go out on one of mine, forcing me to get a rebuilt one in a flat, featureless state. Cost me a premium, plus they had to do a work around to get the standard valve configuration to come close enough to mount properly.

    Once I got it back east, had all of them (including the refurbed one) replaced with proper setups.

    Having a rebuild kit with me could have allowed the work to be done in the field.
