Where does it leak? What is the model #?

Sorry, lack of toilet facilities got the better of me for a moment.

It’s a Headhunter Neoclassic Super Bowl. I am afraid it may be leaking at the base coupling between the bowl and the base assembly. I am getting black tank odor. It doesn’t seem to be leaking continuously or at every flush. Not enough water.

I have removed some cabinetry enough to see that there is no water near the wall and water inlet lines. Also, the odor.

Does anyone know how much play there may be if I unbolt the toilet from the floor?

Fun times. I’m not familiar with that model but check your water connections closely. I had a similar problem on my Microphor (electric). Holding the flush handle too long caused the vacuum breaker/vented loop on the water line to leak. Cleaning the plastic vacuum breaker solved my issue.

That model toilet has a molded rubber connection that has a water inlet connected to it, the toilet drain connects to it, and it in turn connects to the waste outlet.

Each connection has a band clamp and it is possible the only thing you need to do is re-tighten them. To do that you have to remove the toilet to get at the underside. The problem could also be the molded rubber part has developed a tear or crack.

If that is the case you need a new part from Headhunter. A few basic tools are all that is required to remove the toilet but depending on the configuration of the bathroom and how much space you have to work in the project can either be somewhat easy or incredibly difficult. The repair does not require special skills, just patience.

I would urge you to NOT consider a replacement toilet. There is no current Headhunter toilet that is a direct replacement and you are going to be very far ahead if you can repair or replace the molded part. If you want to tackle this job you can email me direct and I can walk you through the process.

Also, the toilet is rear discharge, not a direct drop into the holding tank like most. Heathunter is real good about helping with parts and diagnosis.

Our plans are to leave here Friday for 5 weeks in Utah. Given the time that I have, I think I should get assistance from a professional here in Vegas. Does anyone know of an experienced coach repair facility or service in this area?

I cannot suggest anyone in the area to help you, but I can tell you that whoever you select they need to be able to handle the job with care. You want someone who will push the contents of the bowl out before starting, someone that knows how to shut of flow of water through the flush valve, someone who realizes they have to disconnect not only the plumbing connections, but the wiring to the switch/timer.

You want someone who will protect the marble floor from scrapes that will be left by the ceramic toilet, and someone who will not beat up the vitricor or wood work in the toilet room.

There is no magic to finding and stopping the leak, just patience, a few basic tools, and a willingness to use care in taking everything apart and out, as well as replacing it. Less than 2 hours to get it out and apart and back in. There will be some swearing involved.

Thanks to everyone for the input and recommendations. The toilet only leaked the one time and the odor is now minimal. I have spoken to several services here in Vegas and I don’t have much confidence in their experience. Kind of like you said Jon. I think we are going to stay on course with our plans for now and do a refurb later in the year. If it starts leaking continuously, we will make a run to Taylor Tours in Phoenix. Thanks Dan.
