Leaking (rather quickly) diesel from fuel tank!
Posted by Charlie on November 26, 2016 at 12:10 pmHi All,
You might remember me from my post about parking physics/geometry. Well, I bought the bus and was planning on posting an intro post, but sadly my first post as a bus owner is one asking for help.
I noticed after taking delivery of the coach that after driving it home to NJ from TN that the back was covered in oily substance and the bus smelled like diesel. It had not at my PDI or during the day I spent with it at delivery.
I just filled it up for the third time returning from Thanksgiving in Virginia, pulled over to wait for the Mrs. who had gone in to buy Starbucks, and notice that there is a fairly urgent fuel leak coming from the fuel tank in the middle of the bus.
Any suggestions other than having the bus towed to a service location?

Charlie…
Who is the converter, and do you have extended tanks? Might open you email address to receive private emails…

Charlie,
Do you know where the leak is? Fuel tank? Fuel Line? Fuel Pump? etc.? I would think knowing that will determine what the best course of action would be. A tow driver may not even want to tow you if you are leaking a good amount of fuel without first trying to correct (even if as a temp fix) the problem.

on bottom of tank. one for main tank and one for aux if equiped. If aux there is a connecting hose should be assesible from evap compartment. also if you were not level you might have overfilled it. dual fuel inlets?

Who is the converter?
Since you just fueled, it’s possible the overflow vent hose has come off the top of the tank and is pushing fuel out.
As Robert pointed out, if you have long range fuel (auxillary tank) there is a hose connecting the two tanks and that hose can leak. If it’s not accessible, you have to remove the insulation in order to see it.

bay just infront of evap/condensor bay—drivers side—- black recessed pannel with aprox 10 mm bolts holding in, Also behind condensor drivers side you can access fittings on top of tank. small panel upper left/stainless– access outlet to engine and return lines also outlet to genset etc top of tank
Would like to know outcome as it might help me or someone else in future.

With coach running are you seeing any fuel dripping under the coach anywhere? Depending on location of fuel leak would determine if safe to drive or not also would verify leak location and extent of leak before I called anyone for a hazmat issue…….

Hi Everyone, thank you all for the replies and sorry for the delayed response. I don’t always see reply buttons on the forum even though logged in. They appeared today so I get to respond…
Yes, the bus leaks from the gas tank while running. But it basically stops leaking once it drains off to whatever level it is now (I can’t tell, the fuel gauge doesn’t work). I ended up not towing the coach but decided that it had actually been leaking for my entire journey home from TN after filling up. It explains the black spots all over the back of the coach.
I already had an appointment at the Prevost center in NJ for this Friday. I will take the bus to them on Friday to be sorted out.

P.S. Another website oddity, I don’t see my signature showing up yet I set one in my profile.

You have to log on to have it all work as intended.
Go back to the email with the user name and password. Cut and past them to log in.. Let the system remember you. You will always be recognized by the system after that. If your signature does not show up, go back to the profile and re-enter it again. Then it should work.

Charlie,
Go to the last topic on the forum for troubleshooting and you’ll see one for missing reply button.

Testing reply and signature…
Also, I dropped my XL off at the Prevost Center in New Jersey. They were nice and showed me and my wife a tour of the facility, gave us a Prevost knit hat each and Prevost pens… Whoop Goldberg’s ’98 XL was in for service…

Jupeman,
I’m signed in as you, have the reply button and I’m replying to your last post.
You must have a problem with your computer.
You can also see the signature and avatar you placed.

To reinforce what Tom said, to see the edit and reply buttons and to have profile activities work you must use the EXACT user name and password which is why we say to cut and paste the user name and password.
It is difficult if not impossible to tell certain letters or numbers so they are likely wrong when manually entered. A 1, l, or capital I are difficult to tell from one another as an example. Tom logged in by cutting and pasting. The user name and password is also case sensitive so there are potential gotchas unless and until you cut and paste and have your c omputer or system remember you.
