  • Leaking norgren

Posted by Tim on October 31, 2017 at 6:46 pm

I thought I had seen the answer to this before but have scoured the posts and cannot find it. I am helping a friend with a 1991 Liberty H340 and there is a suspension issue.

Coach goes to road height and holds well while driving although the compressor does cycle a lot. When stopped the Drivers side rear drops all air within about 5 minutes and it is exhausted out of Port 3 of the left Norgren valve in the attached picture. In the diagram it is described as left levelling valve. Pretty sure it is a valve in rear allowing it to leak back but thought I would ask before I get it all blocked up and crawl under.

    TIA…Tim

You may be correct in that it could be the 5 port norgren valve in the rear with a leak but I also suspect you might be dealing with multiple issues based on your statement the air is cycling a lot.

When you are in the road or driving position on the level low the air path is through an open 5 port and the ride height valves. When the key is off the same 5 port norgren is supposed to lock all air in the air bags. So your comment suggests you might have air going out a lot of places.

This may not be the information you are looking for, but based on age and the fact your air is cycling a lot you might be looking at a whole coach project to isolate and repair leaks I also think that vintage coach unless modified requires the aux system air pressure to remain above about 35 PSI at all times otherwise the three port valves on the frame above and between the drive and tag axles will release tag axle air pressure.

Thanks Jon. I guess I will start by looking at the 5 port Norgen and go from there. After the 5 or so minutes it takes to drop the DS rear the tag bag is empty. (It is the only one I can reach in and touch without going under)

Just checked and the air is exhausting from Port 3 of the same Norgen Valve while the coach is running as well.

    Thanks again…Tim

Based on left side down in 5 minutes and short cycling air compressor, I will guess left side height control valve. Second best guess is a leaking plastic air line or fitting in the steering compartment that goes to the level low control manifold.

But I might be wrong for your vintage.

Thanks…Any any all suggestions appreciated. Will repost on this thread when we get it figured out.

If only the tag air bag is losing air it may be the three port between the two axles is a contributor. But the fact air is leaking out a front valve suggests to me the 5 port may also be a part of the problem.

Does the aux air pressure remain above 35 PSI when the tag air bag is deflated? If so it could be the 3 port, but if not there is a bigger aux system leak causing the deflation.

Finally quit raining and is drying up a bit so I went out and put it on blocks. When the rear DS drops and the valve continues leaking there is still over 100 PSI on the auxiliary gauge. It does drain down as air continues to exhaust from port 3. All 3 bags on DS rear lose all air in approx 5 minutes Got a couple of side panels off and checked leveling valve and 5 port valve. No audible leaks or deterioration of lines that I have spotted yet. If it stays dry I will crawl under tomorrow and have a better look.

Haven’t been out except to remove the 5 port valve. Weather has been in low 20’s with howling wind. Did find this excerpt written by Jon last March. This is the one I couldn’t find previously

It should be noted that if the air bags and fittings are determined to be leak free it is probable the Norgren valves are the culprit. The 3 port Norgrens between the drive and tag axles are easily checked because no air should escape from the valve end caps or the exhaust port. The 5 port valves can leak at the valve body and those leaks show up at the end caps which are the pneumatic operators, but also if they leak internally through the exhaust port those leaks show up at a 3 port Norgren in the steer compartment.

Ended up being a combination of the bottom 4 stack valve (only a 4 stack on this one not a 5 stack) and the spool valve on the DS 5 port Norgren. Thanks to all.
