  • Leaking Norgren valve

Posted by AL on June 24, 2013 at 5:18 pm

Have located a leaking Norgren valve. This valve has a hard life being located inside engine bay.

the valve is located passenger side on bulkhead forward and above engine starting bateries.

Has anyone had this valve replaced ? Norgren part # K910080 has 3 air lines plus electric plug in.

Jon or Tom …..I have posted Norgren valve in general discussion slot. It should of been in Pneumatic.

Just a small error…… so I hope I’am not in time out again

    OK, we’ll forgive you.

That must be a Marathon installed valve. What does it do?

I think Jon means “what does it do besides leak?”……

    Good one, Paul.

I have no idea what it does. Did fire a e-mail & pics to Leon at Marathon, Coberg OR.

    Will post his response.

This Norgren valve controls the air for the tag axle when running slides in or out and when you flip the lever on the dash

    to raise tag while turning.

Marathon tech Leon says valve has never been a problem in engine compartment, but is aware of replacements.

Nothing special to do for change but dump Prevost Aux air.

Now I am confused. There are 3 Norgrens on our coaches associated with the tag axle. One on each side maintains an open path between the drive axle and tag axle air bags. When the tag axle air has to be dumped, such as when a slide is moved or when the tag axle needs to be lifted, those two valves close that path so the drive axle air bags retain their air pressure.

The third Norgren which I assume this is controls the position of the two previous mentioned valves (open or closed) and directs air flow to the tag axle lifting chambers. These three valves are Prevost installed and are mounted on the chassis frame above the tag and drive axles.

My first question is why would the pictured valve have been relocated? Assuming it is a tag axle control valve that suggests Marathon has a purpose for the relocation.

Early on when I was testing some gel cell batteries for my local Interstate distributor I did some temperature measurements in the engine area shown. My engine on that coach was an 8V92 which ran about 20 degrees cooler than the current engines, yet the temps in that area approached 180 degrees probably due to the engine block temp, but partially as a result of exhaust manifold temps that often approached 1000 degrees. My guess is the Norgren valves are not designed for installation in areas that hot.

I’am also understanding this valve has been moved as you suggest. Leon was busy getting caught up after returning from the Marathon rally held in Idaho last week. Rained entire event.

You have raised a good question, I’ll call Leon back, get some more infomation on where this valve was positioned by Prevost.

On the other side of this bulkhead are 6- Lifeline Truk4u —-4L batteries along with the needed wiring.

Heat in this area has to effect the life of this valve.

What the heat affects is the life of the O rings and seals on the Norgren. Any other mid 2000s Marathon owners have this valve in this area?

Upon taking a closer look I see this valve is solenoid operated. I’ll stick my neck out and say that valve IS NOT controlling the tag axle because the suspension system valves on our coaches are pneumatically controlled in the rear. (Front also except where modified such as Liberty does.) The question now is what the valve really controls.

Could it have been relocated just for ease of service?

Tom, The fact it is solenoid operated suggests strongly it has nothing to do with the Prevost chassis. I might be wrong but except for converter installed modifications to the suspension I am not aware of Prevost using that actuator on suspension Norgren valves.

Big Al, your assignment is to report back with the real purpose of the valve.

I’ve been working all morning learning this is a Prevost installed valve. As production goes this valve is installed in other locations.

Another location and this is probably where yours might be found; open engine room doors, look at upper cap, valve should be on back side. As I’am told by Prevost.

Another example; on seated coaches this is used for front knelling , valve mounted near front.

In our case used for dumping tag air before extending slides with rocker switch or bus turning lifting tag with flip switch

Assignment; report back when you locate your K-910080 valve.

I have one in the same place and it was leaking and replaced last year.

It dumps the tag air as Al said.

Mine has one, but it operates the back up camera door, Prevost installed.

Hold on there Big Al, are you saying that Jon missed this one and may have the same valve on his Liberty? Good grief, I won’t be able to sleep tonight knowing this got by the God Father!

    Oops.

Should have looked at the drawing. It appears the valve is one of two ways to control air flow to the tag axle lifting chambers.

No excuse, but I have the fancy stainless steel, highly polished sewer hose cabinet sitting on top of the chassis batteries blocking the view of whatever is mounted above the batteries. That is coming out today to see what is going on.
