  • Leaking HWH ram on front slide

Posted by Chuck & Katrina on October 11, 2019 at 9:42 pm

Rear HWH hydraulic ram on front slide is leaking. Doesn’t look like to big of a deal to remove and have rebuilt. Anyone been through this drill before?

Does HWH hydraulic system self bleed the air once its put back together? I am concerned the slide may cock side ways when it is first operated after installing a rebuilt cylinder due to air in the rebuilt cylinder line not allowing the newly installed cylinder to move in sync with the original cylinder.

You can call HWH and go through hours possibly of phone tag with them and order a new ram as well as a option….I dont remember what year it was but most HWH systems had a third small cylinder usually mounted in the ceiling of a bay that was there to assist in equalizing the system for air etc….

You will get a little uneven motion after changing a ram. You can move room in slightly then back out holding out button a little long…Run that way in and out a few times and you will be good..

I did this job a few years back and it was not that difficult HWH slide 2000 model . The middle ram is the sync one. You need to unbolt both slide rams , not the middle sync arm that remains attached. But you do need to unbolt the other ram so it is free to move in and out without moving the slide.from the room and run them in and out a few times till they are same . Then reinstall . If you do not do this you are trying to move the slide and it will jam and bind up .

you remove the 2 lines in the front , remove the bolts , unbolt from slide opposite end and pull the ram out. reverse steps to reinstall . As I said the key is not to be attached to the slide when you are syncing them .

    Hi Erika:

Please clarify that I am understanding your post correctly.

I have three (3) rams. Two (2) actually are responsible for moving the slide and a center one balances or sync’s the two rams that move the slide?

Considering the coach is a 2000 and I have to disconnect both rams I guess I might as well have the front ram rebuilt at the same time.

Any chance you remember what size caps/plugs where needed to cap/plug the lines once they are disconnected from the rams?

Chuck , I did not cap them . I drained what little oil came out and wrapped them in a rag . I only had one that was bad so that was the only one I repaired. Like I said you only unbolt the good one from the slide side so that when you are aligning them there is no force on them or the slide. I recall doing it 4 or 5 times till I felt they were perfect. I did not mess with the sync one and if yours is not leaking you should do the same Leave it be I would think . Al 🙂
