  • Leak – coming in above Microwave

Posted by Rob&Sue on July 25, 2018 at 1:02 pm

    My education continues …

First, we have had exceptionally heavy rain. Here is my current issue:

The other night, my wife thought I left an ice cube on the small countertop, STBRD side, under Microwave – not sure why I would do that, but hey – I couldn’t say I didn’t (at the time).

This morning – while having coffee – I noticed a slow drip – same spot – coming out the plastic vent, under the microwave. Ahha – it wasn’t me! It seems to be obviously above the microwave and rolling down the left side of the MW, pooling .. and dripping out the little plastic vent.

So – has anyone seen this before?

The roof on my coach is very very clean and recently coated. There does seem to be a small vent above the area of concern … see pic.

I thought maybe because of the heavy rain, maybe it is pooling above the zip-dee .. to the point of coming in that vent ??

    Any ideas welcome …

If I am seeing this correctly, the black vent itself is louvered? If so, it seems to reason heavy rains can go down the same way air comes up. If it is not louvered, the source of the water logically is from the sides.

The theory of standing water due to heavy rains would have been a problem before, do you not think so?

Check the condition of the sealant? Is it cracked or was it changed or altered during the recent “coating” of the roof?

    Just my thoughts….

Where a leak appears inside the coach is not necessarily where it enters from above. I have always used this product to seal roof penetrations. It stays flexible applies easy, and flows to a smooth clear surface.

I used masking tape to define the periphery of the sealant. As soon as I coated the desired area, and while the sealant is still tacky I pulled up the tape leaving a neat edge to the sealant. I sealed over existing sealant, over screw or rivet heads, and at seams in the roof such as where the fiberglass caps front and rear were mated to the roof sheeting.

The microwave is vented out the roof of the coach. The vent has vent holes in the corner of the face that is on the roof. They tend to get sealed up when someone seals the roof…They are there for the water to have a path out of the vent if it makes it in…So clean out the outside corners, you will see the metal is raised up there.

Firstly, That roof is some nice for an 18 year old unit.

Jeff is absolutley correct ( of course ) in regards to the drain holes in the vent, you can see them on the bottom right of the vent. Attached is a picture of mine showing what he is talking about. I doubt that is has rained anywhere much harder than it has here in Virginia lately.

You will have to excuse the roof, it’s not near as pristine as yours.
