    You said there was a burnt wire but you didnt specify what prompted you to start investigating. I assume that it wasnt turning over. If so, it seems to me that a good first step would be to just have the starter tested under load at an auto parts store.

    Update:

    Gen had problem due to failed solenoid.

    Iy sent current up the #5 wire when it failed.

    Replaced solenoid & wire – gen now fires up.
