  • Kohler Generator for Marathon 1998+ Tech Manuals

Posted by Ed on July 27, 2021 at 7:42 pm

I share three Service Manuals with the Prevost Community for the Kolher Generator that was installed by Marathon back in late 1998 to and mid 2000’s. The Kohler Gensets had a Yanmar diesel in them.

The manuals the PC Community just posted came from Yanmar Customer Service last week. One is a service manual and one is a parts manual. Very hard to find …. The 3rd manual is a Kohler Service Parts Manual sent to me by Kolher (It has not been posted).

There is all sorts of goodness info in these manuals especially if you are buying Yanmar 4 cylinder diesel parts or figuring out that your genset needs specific maintenance at 2000 HRS by a qualified mechanic.

I am having the valve lash checked on the Kohler/Yanmar Diesel and weeping freeze plugs in intake manifold replaced so I have been gathering up the lost tech manuals to provide to service tech as guidance.

If you own a Marathon and are missing this documentation the PC has posted it in the Article Section.

    Ed,

Thank you for chasing this down and posting. I should know this about my coach, but is the generator 2 speed? I have noticed the oil pressure sometimes fluctuates like it is changing speeds. Not sure how you vary speed in a generator system. I didn’t think it was possible, but the manual you posted talks about setting high and low speeds.

Yanmar motor has a governor on it which limits its RPM in conjunction with generator. The fan controller for Kohler generator from Marathon has a low speed fan and a high speed fan cooling the large radiator in the center of bus.

    Good definition Governor:

Governor, in technology, device that automatically maintains the rotary speed of an engine or other prime mover within reasonably close limits regardless of the load. A typical governor regulates an engine’s speed by varying the rate at which fuel is furnished to it.

There is a good Kohler Recreational Genset Service Manual in the Article section of PC. I have sent in the Kohler Service Parts manual to be posted.

The Yanmar Diesel in Marathon Genset …my bus not yours is an Industrial Diesel motor.

    4TNE84T-KRV (Kohler Recreational Vehicle).

4TNE is a motor which was produced for world. This is a Tier 3 motor with no emission controls. Newer versions of this motor would be Tier 4..with emission controls. This motor is installed John Deere skid steers and many other forms of farm and construction equipment. Your filters for oil and fuel have a lot of options besides Kohler, Napa, Yanmar, Wix, Baldwin, Fleetguard, Donaldson, etc..
