King Starboard shelving
A few months ago, one of the PC Forum members posted pictures of the remodel project he did in the electrical bay of his coach. He used a plastic for the shelves that is widely used in the boating industry that I think is called King Starboard (I think its HPDE plastic). I’ve searched for his post and can’t find it. Maybe that poster will see my post.
I want to put shelves in the odd shaped bay behind the tag axle of our XLV using the King Starboard and Unistrut. Right I have the sewer hose, water hoses, spare belts, anti-freeze, air hose, and other stuff just tossed in there and figure that space can be more organized.
How easy is the King Starboard to cut, trim, and shape? Can I use a Skill saw to cut it and a router to make a rolled edge on it? Should I buy large pieces and cut them to size? or buy pre-cut pieces?
Is this a good place to source the material? Or is there a better place?

Dick, I have used quite a bit of this board in different thicknesses, and yes easy to cut and round with router and even a coarse file woks great for me. I buy a 4X8 sheet and have them cut it in 4 pieces 2’X4′ and UPS it to me.It would be great for what you are wanting to do IMO.

What is a reasonable thickness for shelveing? 3/8″ enough? 1/2″ more than is really necessary? Having never used it, I don’t have a feel for how strong it is. I’m planning on putting two pieces UniStrut (essentially channel iron) under the Starboard to support it about a third of the way in from each side.
BillS: Where do you normally buy it from? Cutting a 4×8 sheet into four pieces for easy shipping makes sense. Because of the size of the tag bay and I expect to put in there I don’t think the weight on an individual shelf will be huge. My vision is mostly hoses, belts, funnels, a couple of jugs of anti-freeze, oil, trans lube, some tools, and jumper cables.
Being a regular on the Garage Journal Forum I’ve learned that “it didn’t happen if there aren’t pictures”.

I don’t know about this material, but all the wood closet shelving I’ve installed this year for Habitat is 1″ material, with a true thickness of 3/4″.
Take some pics & let us know how it turns out.
