  • Kevlar to save your arms

Posted by John on July 15, 2017 at 2:15 pm

There are many excellent posts on this forum on how to do this and that……. to date I have found none that mention the following.

Every time and I mean always, when I work on my bus or anything else, my arms look like a 9 car fatality the following day. Most of us are not teenagers anymore and the older we get the easier it is to make the skin of our forearms look like uncooked sausage. Reaching into tight places, getting snagged by that sharp thing, the list is endless. Bruises, cuts and dings are not pretty.

Finally found the solution, Kevlar Chaps or sleeves that can be had from Amazon or at least 100 other vendors. Slip those things on before attacking a task then feel free to reach into evry tight spot on the planet without worrying that people will ask questions about your health. The best 15.00 the do it yourselfer can spend!

I highly endorse the advice about kevlar sleeves; I’ve been using them for years. They come in different lengths with or without thumb holes. Grainger carries them. My wife ordered a package of a half dozen from Amazon not long ago. They’re washable. I keep some in the bus and in the garage at home.

Speaking of sharp things, if you use a tie wrap and cut off the tail, the cut is very sharp and will do unhappiness to your arm or anything that comes near it. Assuming the tie wrap is in a place where it is safe to have an open flame you can briefly melt and smooth off that cut end by using a lighter of some kind (cigarette lighter or BBQ lighter). Kirby

You two guys must be doing something wrong if you need body armor.

On occasion I work on my bus and I not only never get cut or bleed, I never even get dirt under my manicured fingernails. I did find the other day when I was dusting my polished slack adjusters that I had to wash my hands when I got done.

    Good advice BTW.
