  • Jump Starting Question

Posted by Paul on January 14, 2016 at 3:35 pm

    Hello Folks,

I am in the process of moving items from my old silver eagle bus to this Prevost XL. I always carried a large stand up style 12v battery charger for times when my eagle would have an issue and need some help starting. Am I reading the Prevost manual correctly that you have to have a 24v charger to charge or jump the bus batteries? I am just trying to figure out if this 12v charger I always carried is going to be useful on this bus or if there was another type of charger I should look into.

    Thanks,

    Paul

You need 24 volts and lots of them.

The 12 volt charger would help if you separated the batteries and charged them individually, but will not start the coach.

I see. Do you and the others here carry 24 volt chargers for an emergency charge or start?

Most of us have built in chargers and a bridge start from the house batteries. Geo.

    Not exactly……………

Early coaches had 12 volt DC house power, and some of the later coaches with 24 volt house circuits did not have a means of merging the house and chassis batteries.

The chassis chargers on all three of my coaches would charge the chassis, but were not sized large enough to jump start the coach. The best solution is to replace chassis batteries before they let you down even if you have a way to merge the house and chassis batteries.

I do carry a 24 volt charger that has the 75 amp start switch on it. Normal charge is 10 or 15 amp.

Buddy beat me again…………I also carry a 24 volt charger. Since we put in new chassis batteries it’s just been taking up space, but it’s one of those things you don’t leave home without.

This may be a dumn question. Does anyone of you carry jumper cables?

For some reason or another, I must have decided to carry a heavy duty jumper cable around with me.

    Am I wasting valuable space?

    Cheers,

    Ronald

Yep, two sets so I jump if necessary.

If you plan on jump starting the cables mush be of the highest quality possible with very heavy duty clamps. When you are forced to jump start, not only will the dead batteries be drawing power from the new battery source, the starter is going to draw a lot of power.

Wear gloves because when the bus starts if you grab the jumper cables to disconnect you can get a burn because the cable clamps are going to get very hot.
