Jon: You’re questions weren’t too harsh or too critical … just harsh and critical enough to make me realize “nice insurance” what a poor choice of words. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

$175,000 of Actual Cash Value for both collision and comprehensive, $250K/$500K for both liability (I have an umbrella) and bodily injury, and some other miscellaneous coverage.

    $1,384.67 a year.

I was skeptical going to Allstate. But after five years with Miller the premium jumped and it seemed they were having difficulty placing the insurance. I’d noticed on the PC Forum that some owners were getting coach insurance from their auto/homeowners carrier.

So … I called my Allstate agent. I was immediately turned over to the “specialized coverage” guy. I grilled him on whether he understood what a Prevost was and why a 22 year old coach would be worth low six figures. He said he was was familiar with lots of high end things as it does lots of boats, yachts, motorhomes, and airplanes. (Whether through Allstate or they place somewhere else, I can’t remember.) He said he knew what a Prevost was. It took a couple of days and he got back to me with the coverage and rate.

If something bad happens, I known from day one of coach ownership I’m going to have a fight with the insurance company; hopefully I’ll have the fight and not my POA or estate. That’s just the nature of big stuff.

The policy says I got $912.85 in discounts on the coach for having multiple policies, being 55 and retired, and it being a transfer (I presume from another company). Did I “really” get a discount? I don’t know. This is where insurance pricing starts to look like a leather jacket in Tijuana.

Michael: The insurance agent and the company rate your risk, policy, and price varies on many things. A couple of the big ones (beyond your driving record and the dollars involved) are where you live and how you’re going to use the unit. (But you probably knew that already.) I would expect that living in Grafton or Green Bay or off the grid on a truck farm in the hills of Tennessee is rated less expensively that if you lived in say close-in suburb of Chicago or if you were full-timing. You really won’t know until you get your coach and buy insurance. If you have a number of coverage with one agent, call him or her and ask them to rate coverage for you on a hypothetical coach that you might consider. Then you’ll know.

I’ll give you an update at renewal time next April or May.

Dick, share that special department for Agreed Value with Allstate. I have everything with Allstate and they could not do an Agreed Value policy, but did use the highest comp found on the internet for the basis of my ACV policy.

    Tom:

I obtained “Actual Cash Value” coverage, not “Agreed Value”. See the second paragraph.

    My agent is:

    Brandon Bystol

    262-253-4600

    BrandonBystol@allstate.com

The agent I worked with is Shannon Morehouse.

I’ll repeat…….Unless you have an agreed value policy you have just allowed the insurance company to decide the market value of your coach.

How comfortable do you feel letting someone who has a large financial stake in the business agreement you are in with them thinking your coach has the same value you think it does?

Your agent might be the nicest guy in the world and your best friend and he has zero chance of convincing the insurance company what you think is the real value of your coach is correct.

Quote from Jon- “How comfortable do you feel letting someone who has a large financial stake in the business agreement you are in with them thinking your coach has the same value you think it does?”

    I couldn’t agree more!
