Join the 9 MPG club here
Posted by Peter on March 4, 2013 at 9:41 pmThere are several threads about fuel economy already.
There are plenty of tall tales and big talk.
Here is where you can post proof. A pic of your dash showing the Pro Driver and related instruments will do.
Liars may post elsewhere.

Unfortunately even a picture such as that can be bogus.
Reset the Pro driver at the top of a hill, coast down the hill and take a photo of any mileage you wish to show in a post to impress your fellow drivers.
That is one reason I use 5000 mile blocks of distance before I consider the data my Pro-Driver shows to be valid. Look at the boost gauge and you will see the bus is coasting. There is no way to know the distance traveled to get the MPG value shown.

3 lbs of boost at 1500 rpm on series 60 my 5 year old grand kid knows better than that nice try though
I will never understand the fuel debate you pay big bucks for a coach that is made to run highway speeds then drive 55 mph to save fuel
I live in the west out here anything over 5mpg is a gift as long as the American Express holds out I’ll just keep on buying fuel a 50,000 lb+ 45 ft coach is not a VW

I completely agree it is somewhat senseless to go to extremes to save fuel when the depreciation on the average bus here makes the cost of fuel each year nothing more than a rounding error.
But I drive slow. Al said it as well as I could. At my normal driving speed I can leave my cruise control on, relax, let others pass me, and rarely do I have to kick the cruise off because I am running up on the back of a truck and need to wait for an opening to change lanes. When traffic is tight and everybody is running faster than I normally drive I kick off the cruise and go with the flow, but on the open road I just kick back and relax. I used to always be in a hurry. Not any more.

Just an observation after taking a second look at Peter’s dash, look at the tach and the speed. Most of us with a Series 60 would not see that combination of values. Must be a coach built with the Series 60 and the 5 speed Allison, not the 6 speed.
There are times I wish I had the 5 speed.

How’s this look?? It’s from my Prodriver during one of my
1st tuning runs. I was very excited to see numbers like that and I can make
anyone’s Prodriver show similar mileage. Of course it’s not the actually
mileage, I made a mistake when I was changing the Fuel Table in the ECM.
Now I’m looking for the elusive 100 M.P.G. carburetor that will fit my 14 Liter, we all know it’s out there, they just don’t want anyone to have it.
-
Jon, you are right. My bus does have the 5 speed Allison transmission.
5th only gear is overdrive. Not sure what the axle ratio is.
And I admit maybe I was going downhill a tiny bit. You guys are a tough crowd!

I think after we all get a little experience with coach ownership we get a little jaded.
I do think you can get 9 MPG out of coaches such as your vintage because they tend to be lighter than later models and the Series 60 in them was pretty efficient. But to get that mileage you do need a little help, like level ground, a tailwind, no toad, AC off, slow speed, etc.

Like anything else. Maybe Ken’s advice will help me push 9-10mpg. I had to put gears in anyway. My tank hold’s 250 Gal(max) so useable could =several nites camping between 7 mpg and say 9. Plus it’s a challange….for the heck of it! Bob

Bob, One thing you will find is if you have a generous supply of fuel on board you have the opportunity to significantly reduce the cost of fuel. You will not be wearing out that American Express card,
I used to have 298 gallons in the previous coach. And that coach had the pre-emissions Series 60 and weighed about 6000 pounds less than the current coach. My comfortable range was 1800 miles. It was not unusual to do a round trip from Knoxville to anywhere and back. Along the way I scoped out fuel prices and if any were the cheapest, on the return that is where I fueled. More than 67% of my refueling was in excess of 200 gallons so saving a dime per gallon bought me a Happy Meal or two.
I think your coach is going to get better mileage than I got because I think the transmission you installed and the gear ratio is going to be a very good combination so you may be one of the lucky ones saving so much fuel it overflows.
-
Will have catch pan! Just the challange. Like a child… You can’t do that! If I don’t , will not tell anyway. Really intrested in the new Allison 10spd Automatic they are testing out west. Clifford has talked some about it. Might soon be the new normal. Bob

Only way I could my 2 stroke Jimmy to 9 mpg would be to drive her off a cliff. It Even then it would have to be a long drop.
