Jeep Rubicon towing
Posted by Larry on October 17, 2019 at 12:31 pmmy 2015 Rubicon is almost impossible to shift in or out of N. I follow the manual procedure but it is too hard to shift. Shop says everything checks normal but something is not right.
The jeep is automatic, Rubicon Unlimited.
any Jeep guys out there having the same problem?

My 2016 Sahara is the same issue however, noticed the more i shift the better it gets… When new, it was almost impossible as thought i would bend the handle it took so much force, but seems to have become easier…. Not sure the mechanism that is involved but sure is difficult to say the least…..

I broke a shift cable this summer on my 08 Sahara, not a fun fix and if you’re in the boonies your screwed. I’ve found that if I have the motor running, transmission in neutral and when turning the key off immediately move the transfer case to neutral allows it to move easily. You kind of have to time it just right, but it works.

Brady, thanks for that.
My ‘05 Rubicon was fairly easy but it had linkage the ‘15 uses a cable and what a PITA. They are always improving, right.

We have 2014 Rubicon. The transfer case is occasionally hard to get into neutral . When that happens, I start the engine, shift to drive then back to neutral and then the transfer case is easier to shift. It acts like maybe the gears need to move just a little to allow the transfer case to get into neutral. Not sure if that is what is really happening, but it works for me.

Thanks, I have been reluctant to shift while engine is running due to a caution in my owner’s manual, gear clash will result.
might give it a try, thanks

I don’t have a Wrangler, but are you in Park when you shift? That uses the driveline to hold the vehicle stationary, putting torque through the T-Case. Try neutral with either the footbrake or parking brake applied.

The procedure called for in the manual is to have Pbrake applied and transmission in N

Glad I am not the only one fighting this issue. Doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen! Sometimes worse than others. Especially after ultra long tows. Was considering the new 2023 Jeep GC since they claim it is easier and then I have read the horror stories of all the tech on them. They are nice though.

I have had the issue a few times and do exactly as Dan and Andre. It has always worked so far.
