  • Jake brake intermittently working

Posted by Kathy on April 14, 2019 at 12:12 pm

hey guys, you’ve always helped me out. Thank you!!!

our 1987 coach has a jake brake controller which goes off intermittently. No rhyme or reason for it? Hubby has pulled it apart and ensured all connections are making contact. So looking for a particular jake brake controller- on the off chance one of you resourceful guys knows where to get a limited year controller.

    thank you in advance

Did you also check in the rear? On each bank of cylinders under the valve cover are wires that go to the jake solenoids. Verify they are OK, not chafed and the connections at the solenoids are good. When the jake quits working you can isolate the location of the problem by letting the engine idle, and putting 12 volt power to the 2 jake terminals in the electric box in the rear. I think it is terminals 1 and 2 but check the diagram to verify.

With the engine at idle, and you supply 12V power to either terminal you should hear the engine lug down. If it does not the problem is in the rear. If it lugs the problem is associated with the touch pad control.

Just had an issue with mine this past weekend on a trip. First time ever as I keep my jakes on almost all the time. Found breaker in compartment below driver, top door, tripped (think 49) Reset and jakes worked again. First time in 50,000 miles and 9 years that happened. If yours is intermittent don’t believe that would be your problem. Think There’s also a breaker in back associated with them also. Would have to look in my manual for that number. Should be on your door if info tags are still there.

mine acted like that and then finally went out completely. It ended up being chafed wiring where excess slack was tied to the transmission at the factory when it was built. That is what the tech said at Clarke Power services that repaired it.
