Jake Brake and brake lights
Posted by Loc on February 2, 2019 at 9:06 pmIs there a way with the multiplexed coaches to turn off the brake lights when the Jake Brake is engaged (release the throttle with the Jake on and the brakes light up)? In the old coach it was as simple as pulling the relay. I typically run with the Jake Brake on and I don’t like lighting up the brakes everytime I let off the throttle to maintain a safe following distance.

Loc,
Should be a relay in the rear run box above the motor.

On the multiplex coaches, there is a wire that has to be grounded out. Prevost did my 2011 while I was picking it up in Stuart. They were there working on a warranty issue with another coach. Cut a wire in a harness and grounded one side of it out. I don’t remember which one, but Prevost should be able to tell you.

Any changes to the electrical system on a multiplex coach are going to show as a fault so as Mark suggests get hold of Prevost. Some may just require a simple change as Mark describes, others may involve programming. Multiplex systems measure all electric values such as current flow, voltage and resistance to verify the systems are Ok or to identify a fault.
Even something simple as changing the type of headlights or clearance lights may show up as a fault.

if you ground that wire it will throw a code
there is a way to do it thru the rear box, it is against policy to do it but they will tell you how and its up to you
they must of liked marks smile

Do all the brake lights come on or just the third light? Why do you care if the lights come on?

Greg,
All the brake lights come on when you release the throttle. There is nothing wrong with the brake lights coming on. Just my preference based on driving in the I-10 or I-45 Conga Line of traffic. The Conga Line tends to get irritated because they think you are riding the brakes then they cut you off and give you the middle finger of solidarity.
The bus is at Prevost getting a Level III and they are going to see what it takes (nobody was sure off the top of their head other than to say it does require programming). I will post the answer when I have it.

John Kincaid from JAX was the one who initiated my fix. He had a tech from JAX do the work. John is no longer with us, but I would think anyone at JAX would be able to tell you. There was no programming done on my 2011 to fix the issue, but if there is a difference between how the Jake works compared to the retarder, there could be I suppose.

so after the fix the lights only work when the service brakes are tapped?

It may be of interest to note that the brake lights trigger most, if not all, trailer brake controllers. I don’t, and wouldn’t think, anyone towing a trailer would want the trailer brakes to activate with the Jakebrake.
I would be interested in knowing if there are thoughts otherwise.

I got to meet Loc and visit with him last week at Prevost Houston. I enjoyed his company on a hectic day. I did not get to accept his offer of a great Mexican meal that evening, but I sure appreciate his Texas hospitality.
Thank you, Loc for your kindness! The new bus is beautiful!

John, I have the Jake/brk light relays pulled and it does not affect the trailer lights. Geo.

Loc,
Since when has anyone ever been able to pass you?
And the solidarity thing… that’s just some friendly folks from Texas wishing an Aggie well….
