As one thought leads to another; has anyone every purchased a Coach and swapped out the old motor for a new or new rebuilt D-60. Just how much does a new engine cost? Is that better to do a new motor or deep fixing the older unit? Michael

Like Les … humid SE. I always add Biobor at each fuel stop, according to the lable .. just a little. And only fill at high volume truck stops. Never had a fuel problem.

Here is a link with one example of pricing for a rebuilt 60 Series.

A number of coaches have had an engine swap.
There are some things to be aware of however. First, if the coach has an 8V92 it is highly likely a great amount of the cost and effort is going to involve a completely different or reconfigured tag axle because the Series 60 is longer than the 8V92. Also involved is going to be a transmission change, also due to the length of the replacement engine. The six speed automatic or a 10 speed autoshifting transmission may be required, both of which are shorter than the original transmission hooked to the 8V92..
It is not cheap to rebuild an engine, or do a direct swap, but in terms of cost comparison using the existing type engine compared to changing engine types there is no less expensive way to go, even if the new engine is free.

I was surprised on a swap motor for $19K including labor. A terrific comment about remaining with the same motor to reduce the need for a transmission swap. It gives me some more parts of the puzzle. Thanks Michael

Just to be sure my comments were understood, when Prevost went from the 8V92 to the Series 60 they started with the 45 foot coach just introduced for motorhome conversions and they could use the 5 speed Allison typically used with the 8V92 because the rear overhang was longer and the combination length of the Series 60 and the 5 speed would fit.
They had to delay the use of the Series 60 in 40 foot coaches until the shorter six speed transmission was available. The tag axle configuration changed somewhere around that time also because the original axle design was not compatible with the engine/transmission combination length.
So swapping engines of the same type is no big deal, but it gets complex if the coach was not set up for the new engine being installed and a lot has to change to handle a different engine.

I found it interesting that I can get Diesel Kleene at Walmart, NAPA, PepBoys etc but BIOBOR isn’t available within 100 mikes of me. If I want BIOBOR I have to order it through Amazon which is kind of a pain.I like the idea of using something to keep the bad stuff out of the fuel and want to make sure I use the right one if in fact there’s a big difference between them?

Amazon Prime delivering to my door is not a pain for me, it is my prefered provider.

Hi Les,
I know that Amazon Prime is used by many, but for $990 and the few times I’d use it isn’t worth it, it’s a not a good deal for me. I’m going to call Detroit Diesel in the morning to see if they recomend this type of product and do they recommend one over the other?

Harry, we live about an hour away from Knoxville and although we have decent shopping nearer, it seems the FedEx or UPS truck deliveres stuff to our house daily.
We now get even items delivered that are easy to source locally. Since Amazon, Walmart and Google will eventually take over the world, we just got onboard early.
I guess Walmart is scared since we get Amazon to bring us stuff the next day instead of driving the 2 miles to our Super Walmart.
Happy Trails
